Defense changing -

From curse.com/wowdb.com:

Defense skill line description change

Old value: Higher defense makes you harder to hit and makes monsters less likely to land a crushing blow.

New value: Higher defense improves your chance to dodge, parry, and block attacks, makes you harder to hit, and makes monsters less likely to land a critical strike against you.

Anybody care to elaborate on consequenses of this? I thought defense had always done what is described as "New value" So what does Blizz mean by this? Also it doesn't affect crushing blow. To make it harder to become uncrushable - or because crushing is going to go?

Greetings,

Slam

It doesn't change anything, they're just clarifying what defense actually does.

ummm defense does nothing for crushing blows. Your level vs the mobs level determines that.

crushing blow calculation is not taking defense from items into account

I always thought the chance of crushing blows was always based on your defense skill, capped by the base max allowable by your level. So like lore said, having 345/350 defense skill you can be crushed by a level 72 mob, whereas going over 350 it is capped because of your level. Or having 320/325 at level 65, you can be crushed by a level 67 mob, but going over 325 doesn't stop crushings to a level 68 mobs because of the max base skill per level cap.

The same used to apply with weapon skill and glancing blows pre-TBC at around when AQ was released if i remeber right. Before the AQ patch, increasing your weapon skill via items or racials you could reduce glancing blows even further, increasing dps. At that point, they implemented the max base skill per level cap, and thus all weapon skill at that point bast max base was decrease miss chance, dodge, parry and block.

Crushing blows are a mobs weapon skill (Always max) vs your current base def. 1 Def=1% to be crushed basically.

"When the attacking mob has 15 or more points of weapon skill above the player's base defense there is a chance of being struck by a crushing blow. The chance is 2% per point of difference minus 15%. If the rating difference is exactly 15 points, which is common for players being attacked by "boss" mobs (who are always treated as 3 levels higher than their attackers), then the crushing blow chance is 15% (which is 2% * 15 - 15%).

The maximum defense that can be applied by a player against reducing crushing blows versus mobs with higher weapon skill is 5 * the player's level. A level 70 player therefore cannot apply more than 350 points of defense against crushing blows versus level 71 and higher mobs, even if the player's normal defense is higher than 350. "

"If your Defense skill is fully trained for your level, neither more Defense, nor Resilience, nor any other kind of bonus can reduce the nominal chance for you to receive a Crushing Blow. The only way to reduce your chance of receiving a Crushing Blow is for your combined chance to be missed, to dodge, to parry, and to block to be so high that the Crushing Blow chance is pushed off the bottom end of your attacker's Attack Table."
