Single target threat gen equivalent?

I am kind of getting concerned about my single target threat gen Vs warrior tanks. Last night for the first time on leothras i end up not tanking him for more than 5 seconds after a WW because the warrior MT had pulled him off of me which is the first time this has ever happened it quite honestly frustrated the hell out of me and i had to actually use a mana pot becuase i was running out of mana from not getting hit. So i was wondering how much Spell damage should i use to generate about 1500 tps or is it even possible without Aevenging Wrath. my armory http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Burning+Legion&n=Joacimcans and my guilds warrior MT's armory http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Burning+Legion&n=Darkimage

I mean he has more pieces of T5 but that really shouldnt be an issue. Also note that i tanked leo with a flask of supreme power so +70 more SD and i had icon of the silver cresent which is another +43 SD and i even oiled my weapon mid fight for +42 more spell damage. I didnt have my belt of the guardian crafted at the time yet tho. so -21 spell damage from that. but i did have my crystal forge hand guards on for +29 more spell damage and i have them enchanted with +2% threat.

Assuming i added right that is 502 spell damage with a 2 piece tier 4 bonus and i couldnt keep aggro. So the point of this rambling is did warriors get a HUGE tps boost or something?

The warrior tanks normally deliberately eat the whirlwind bleed so that they are sitting at full rage bars as off-tanks.
That isn't a normal state of affairs, merely a feature of the fight.

Frontloaded Heroic Strike, Shield Slam, Thunderclap burst can be pretty impressive. Dont think we have the monopoly on burst threat if warriors are able to let their ability cooldowns allign while not attacking during the few seconds Leo is whirling around.

Even with very high threat output, as a Paladin I normally would surrender aggro to one of the warriors about half the time before the next Whirlwind.

What is important is that you are absolutely incredible at picking him up in the first place, saving lives, healer mana, and time.
Don't discount the value of that.

If you are picking up Leo the instant he comes out of whirlwind successfully each time, even if the warriors immediately pull aggro off you you are making an utterly invaluable contribution to the success of the fight.
Don't worry too much about it on Leo. If it happens, just throw up a Judgment, JoW back up to full, and switch to a Nightfall if you have it until the next transition.

Also, it is hard to combat a trinketed (Auto Blocker) shield slam crit, which some warriors have a macro for for this fight in particular. Obviously the crit is random, but since you and the warriors are battling for threat, there is a 90% chance they will crit with it and take aggro Smile

i realise that i was helping the raid a ton by picking him up with AS but i just felt a bit lacking as a tank when this warrior is at 1500 tps and i am only around 900ish i just cant figure out why with just over 500 spell damage i cant even come close to his tps. Like i said he doesnt terribly out gear me in comparrison just has more T5 pieces but mine doesnt help with my threat gen really other than the + spell damage over some of my other pieces.

You're not really talking about a sustained TPS situation, though. You're talking about bursting threat after a wipe, and *then* sustaining. If the warrior can get revenge to light up during the WW (I assume yes? haven't seen leo yet), and can HS/SS/Rev in the span of 1.5 seconds, any or all crits will give him a huge amount of threat. Just like if you crit AS and JoR while AW is up, you'll get a huge amount of threat.

Whoever gets there first is likely to keep it.

With the latest patch and change to Devastate we have seen a huge increase on TPS on our Warrior tanks, they definitely can outtps me now on single targets, especially when we both are in mitigation gear (low spelldamage for me, around 400 only).

We were a bit behind on single target threat before, we are a good bit behind now.

Hopefully, that will get equalized to a certain degree. Though like the joke about the bear goes, I don't have to be fast, just faster than you.

We don't have to have as much threat as a Warrior, we just have to have more threat than the dps.

Once again, it really comes down to the threat generation mechanics of each class.

Yeah, we're behind on TPS on a single target, but we can raise the threat ceiling if we really try. A good chunk of our threat production is reactive... Just have to keep that in mind.

I'm not so sure that they'll equalize TPS ... But closing that gap significantly would be nice.

Sorry if I'm harsh. Absolutes bother me when giving advice, but I was a bit too strong there.

The problem with raising reactive threat is that in order to do that, you have to skimp on avoidance. You might be able to make that up with gear, but it's fairly unreliable. I believe that instead of possibly hurting your tanking, you just have to improve it via spelldamage.

But really, warriors are going to beat us unless you get upwards of 1200 SD. That's just how strong the new talents are for them. It also shouldn't matter given the benefits a paladin tank gives. Let warriors be the best single target threat out there. That won't take away from paladins being the best multitarget threat or all of the buffs/debuffs they provide, or the ability to heal. As long as paladins having the viability to tank exists they're fine.

Firstblood, my guild's warrior main tank, is putting together a set that will have the highest block value in the game, for a total of 1067ish.
at the moment he's sitting at about 994 block value, with a pretty massive amount of hit and expertise.
I can keep up with him or even pass him in single-target threat if I push hard and mana-intake can sustain it.
I don't anticipate him being able to pass me in single-target once I get to 4-peice t6.
Thats with the highest block value acheiveable in the game.

edit: the point being that sustained threat I think we are perfectly fine. But the burst-threat warriors are capable of putting out in a short window like an initial pick-up should not be underestimated.
Even Angel-Wings'd Judgement+Avenger's Shield is surpassed if they get a crit or two in their initial Shield Slam+Revenge+Devestate opener.

Oh and yes, it's easy to have Revenge lit up during Leo whirlwind, ready for pick-up.
