Uncrushability problem

Hello everybody,
Yesterday i tried tanking nightbane for the first time in my guild ( /flex ) but it didn't work quite so well. Other than the fear problem, the thing that surprised me was that i was taking normal hits and crushing blows even though my total avoidance is greater than 102.4%. ( 520 def, 21.86% dodge, 16.8% parry 19.03% block - and this is without BoK which i had )
So that makes 5% base miss + 6.8 miss from defense + 21.86 + 16.8 + 19.03 = 69.49. Of course, i have libram of repentance + holy shield always on.
I also read somewhere that there was a tiny chance ( 0.01% ) to still take crushing blows even with an avoidance > 102.4, but throughout the many tries we made i took a lot more normal hits / crushing blows than that.
What is the problem ?

Thanks
Luromerre

Perhaps you are getting unlucky and crushed in between HS? I'm not sure, and i can't speak as well as the people who have been that far into Karazahn, but i figured i would pipe up.

Do you have a WWS to go off of? That usually helps.

It's possible that it was during the brief downtime between holy shield, which will always exist due to server lag

I know this sounds stupid.. but try unbinding your sit key.. You'd be surprised how many people inadvertently hit it.

Nightbane's hit box is funky, too. If he's too far towards the ledge, the server may be registering that he's hitting you from behind.

I assume you know that fear dancing doesn't need you to cast DS/BoP that early and is fine as long as it's casted before his fear cast bar ends.

From my experience of tanking god-knows-how-many times of Nightbane, it is nothing surprising if your holy shield was not up 100% for this fight. I did have some clean Nightbane kills with zero crushing blows but it wasn't for every single kill for sure.

If you are using all your threat skills at every cooldown for maximum threat (except maybe no max rank consecretion occassionally) with an 8 sec improved judgement, and also fear dancing with your finger on DS/BoP/trinket keys. Let me assure you that this will be one of the most busy fights to manage GCDs on a pally tank. You will be casting something almost all the time that there's no time to slack even a little. No chance to pop wings due to BoP/DS sucks too.

Keep in mind though, that crushing blow can be topped up. Nightbane's crushing blow is like Gruul's normal hit anyways. So just chuck a healthstone/LoH through. Warriors take extra damage from berserker stance to break fear and healers still have to keep them up by simply healing more. But getting feared is pretty bad, and will almost always kill someone. So do make sure you are not in GCD from holy shield when you need to cast DS/BoP.

The only way to have full up-time on holy shield is to button smash your keyboard. Prince taught me that when I attempted him with sucky gear. Smash in this priority for Nightbane.

judgement (no GCD) > fear dance keys (unless he just feared recently) > holy shield > reseal SoR > exorcism > consecrete

Am I correct in seeing that you were saying 5% base miss + the miss reflected from Def. Is that the correct way to calculate it? I was told very definitively by my guild's MT War that the miss from Def already contains the 5% base. This seemed odd to me, but he has been MTing raids in Classic WoW since before I had even hit 60.

If what he told me were the case, it would mean that you are leaving yourself a 5% gap in you crush avoidance. If he were wrong, that would mean I wouldn't have to use stupid no-Sta Andormu's Tear (great avoidance, but yeah, I'm a pally, I need Stam) for bosses heh.

Your warrior is wrong. If you take off all your gear and unspec anticipation, you will have 350/350 defense and the defense tooltip will say 0% to reduce chance to be hit.

Quean's correct. You also receive a base Dodge of .65%, base Parry of 5%, and a base Block of 5%, but those are worked into the tooltip of your character sheet.

Most Warriors who MT'd in pre TBC WoW don't even know what a crushing blow is never loan how to calculate avoidance.

Most of them think all you need is 100% block rating to do it for gods sake.

Makes me /cry.
