Crush and Holy Shield Lag

Last night was my first try at something that can crush. We went in and killed Attumen on the first try (yay us). Looking back through the combat log, I suffered 4 crushes. Two were when I was stunned by a knockback. The other 2 actually came BEFORE Holy Shield expired (example below). Granted, I didn't do a very good job of getting it back up (almost 2s, yikes).

My lag usually runs from 50-200 and the post-kill screenshot shows a green latency bar.

Armory

That is the gear I was wearing with the exception of the Violet Signet which was http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30006 instead, which is -1 DR, +6 Agi.

I am a little short of uncrushable unbuffed, but with Kings and MotW I am uncrushable by my calculations and tankpoints (post-kill screenshot confirms Kings and MotW)

Re: Crush and Holy Shield Lag

It happens sometimes, sadly. I've had a 7k crush then have shield fade after =(

One nice change would be to have Imp holy shield also reduce our cooldown by .5/1s

I don't think they are going to bother fixing this because crushing blows are on their way out the door.

Of course, even with the banishment of crushing blows to the outer darkness, Paladins are still going to stack a substantial amoung of +block rating just to wring more threat out of Holy Shield.

Blizz never said they will remove crushings.

It's very possible if not likely that I missed something, but where has it officially (not rumored) that a death knight will be a 2 hander class primarily? Based on the warcraft games as I recall, Arthas used frostmourne and a shield.

If memory serves, while Blizz did NOT say anything about removing crushing blows, they did say that with the upcoming 2h tanking Death Knights, they were going to re-work the way crushing blows work.

Just to stop the speculation, here's the comment from the IRC a few months ago

Question: With the advent of multiple tanking classes in The Burning Crusade, Paladins and Druids are now competing for the role of main tank in 25-man raiding content, extending from Karazhan up through the Black Temple. Has WoW development reviewed the game mechanics of Crushing Blows? In 2.1, the Glancing Blow mechanic has been changed to assist DPS classes - has any similar discussion been undertaken for Crushing Blows?

Kalgan: Yes, we have had a similar discussion regarding crushing blows. We feel they add too random an element for players in endgame content. We expect to deal with this issue at some point in the future (although it may not be immediate).

While I would attribute the second one to lag, since they are less than a second apart (0.016 seconds, to be exact, meaning the events may have happened in a slightly different order than logged), the first crush is very obviously because you were stunned. You can't block anything while stunned, so you are very crushable during that time. That is why the stewards in Moroes' room are so difficult for us to survive (relative to the rest of the mobs, or course). No block = pain for the pally.

I agree about the stun, it happened one other time while I was stunned. I also had a second event like the last one above with the exact same spacing. Am I just unlucky?

10/8 22:01:12.062 Attumen the Huntsman hits you for 2870. (crushing)
10/8 22:01:12.062 You hit Attumen the Huntsman for 98.
10/8 22:01:12.062 Attumen the Huntsman is afflicted by Mind Flay.
10/8 22:01:12.078 Holy Shield fades from you.

Where did Blizz say DK was a tanking class? Just cuz they wear Plate does not a tank make. I know lots of DPS warriors that wear plate, I don't remember anywhere where they said DK was a tank.

Yes, they are a DPS/Tank class.

A: And since we’re designing this class to be able to fill a tanking role in groups, death knights will also be a viable and interesting choice for them, since the tank is one of those absolutely vital group roles.

Q: How do you think adding another tanking class to the existing class lineup will affect the classes that are currently filling tanking spots in groups and raids?

A: When deciding which type of class we would add to World of Warcraft, we also took a very careful look at the current state of the game. The questions we asked ourselves were which kind of class roles are seeing the most use, which class roles are most desirable in groups right now, and what can we do to best meet this demand? Tanks play a critical role in any group, such that without a tank, you really don’t have a group. We think that adding another tanking class will make it easier for players to form viable groups for dungeons and raids, but that won’t be at the expense of existing tanks.

The design balance we’re aiming for is one where all the tank classes are equally good at tanking in general so that you can use whatever tank you happen to have for five-player content, but at the same time we want tanks to be clearly distinct so they excel in different ways in various raid encounters. So our goal is to make the death knight a viable, fun tank that coexists with the current tanking classes without replacing them. It’s also important to keep in mind that even though the death knight is a hero class, that doesn’t mean it is more powerful than the other classes, just that it will offer a very different playing experience.

One interesting difference between the death knight and other tanks is that death knights don’t use shields. This is also a good example of how our design concepts for the class are closely reflected in actual gameplay. If you think of a death knight, you think of this terrifyingly powerful warrior in heavy plate armor carrying around an enormous rune weapon, very much like Arthas does in the cinematics of Warcraft III. You don’t really see death knights hiding behind a shield – that’s just not their style. We take this design concept and then turn it into gameplay that is both fun and fitting for the class.

So when you see a death knight tanking, you’ll probably see a lot of things you wouldn’t see with any other class. The “modern” death knights resemble both the ones you saw in Warcraft III and the ones from Warcraft II, so they will combine powerful melee attacks with rune-based spellcasting to lay waste to whatever gets in their way. This mix of devastating melee abilities and magic attacks will be one of the many characteristics that set the death knight apart from other tanks.

But aside from just making them “different,” we’re also trying to make sure that death knights have the tools they need to fulfill their tanking role in groups – abilities that allow them to hold aggro and mitigate damage -- but also have a few twists to ensure that they’re distinct and valued contributors to the group.

Well Invisusira that certainly answers my shield question, but it makes me question how they're going to implement death knight tanking, my *guess*, is that they will take large quantities of damage mitigated by spell effects, and their resulting health deficit will be made up for in large part by lifetap style spells.

this is all a total guess on my part, but it at least seems logical on the surface. It's going to be a meld of ret pally with warlock.
