Armor:Block Value Equivalents?

Hi,

How do you guys measure the equivalent of Armor:Block Value?

For example, how much Block Value would 60 Armor be?

How hard is the boss hitting you?

Armour is a linear 1 "point" armour to 1 "point" damage reduction (or mostly linear) as a percentage term.

Block value is non-linear, 1 point of block is 1 point of damage reduction, meaning its %age reduction alters with the hit.

So the same % equivalence is only met at one point on the graph.

With 1000 block value, and incoming hits of 1000 there is no amount of armour equal to that block value (Max 100% vs max 75%mitigation), especially once you hit the 102.4%. With block of 1000 vs 10,000 hits the block is worth a constant 10% mitigation vs 75% armour. There is no direct block -> armour comparison since its only true at a particular value of hit, in general though you cannot stack armour well (only a few items have bonus armour), so block tends to win because you can stack it.

as already mentioned, your armor will absorb more damage, as bigger the incoming hits are (the percentage stays the same, but all the numbers are bigger). block value reduces blocked hits by a fixed amount and absorbs a higher percentage of damage the smaller the hits are.

furthermore, armor is applied to physical attacks all the time, regardless if the attack is blocked or not.
once you reached the block cap (102.4% after DR), you should be able to block or avoid every incoming attack, giving your BV a 100% efficiency in terms of mitigation.

BV is also a threat stat, since we got our very own shield slam.

to put it in a nutshell, you can't compare both directly, since it depends on the mobs you are tanking and your gear.
I for myself rate BV quite high. I try to reach the block cap as soon as possible. armor is very important, but since items with the same item level appear to have the same amount of armor it doesn't matter.. we will get that amount of armor regardless if we take item A or item B. the only items that have different values are certain trinkets, cloaks and rings.

Don't compare the hardest hitting boss, its rather pointless as BV looks terrible (300vs 600BV vs Teron Gorefiend Crushes you for 15,000), you need to look at every situation separately.

Typically, the solution is ignore the armour and pick the best item overall (since armour increases with ilevel, and barring a badly optimised piece the higher the ilevel the more preferable since it can stack more stats), you do get cases like 2.4 Stoic Guardian vs et al, however thats a case of good optimisation vs bad. Unless you are talking items with bonus armour, look at the other stats and go with those.

Armor to Damage reduction ration is a nonlinear function.
The Formula is:
DR% = Armor / (Armor + 400 + 85 * (AttackerLevel + 4.5 * (AttackerLevel - 59)))
You can prove this by calculating it's limit with calculus.
That is not a linear function. It's from the wowwiki page on Armor. It even has a graph to visualize it for you.

Block Value to Damage reduction is a linear function
The formula is:
DR% = BV / Damage Taken from Attack.
This is a linear function.

Your numbers are right, I was just saying you mixed up the naming of the functions.

I dont think the question is unreasonable and Im pretty sure you can gather the kind of answer being sought.

Given the hardest hit you will ever take in your life you would like to survive. I dont know but I like armor. Get tankpoints it shows effective health now and is very handy.
