Thinking about Dropping Ardent Defender

If Tankadin is using the code from ArdentFu which, in turn, is using the code from ArdentDefender; then it most assuredly is.

Then shall we agree that for now, the most reliable metric that we have of Ardent Defender's utility is the number of Ardent Defender events, which is also calculated by Ardent Fu?

Basically, all I want for us is to judge Ardent Defender on its own merit. To do that we need to get beyond "it helps," "its more mitigation" and "it saved me this one time at band camp" and start understanding how much exactly it helps.

One of the best posts about Ardent Defender I saw on here had somebody say something along the lines of "You never leave your backup parachute at home when skydiving because you haven't used it yet".

AD is your backup parachute.

I thought it wasn't real.

Your mind makes it real...

And tell me, Mr. Neuron, what good is the ability to sentence someone to eternal damnation... if you are unable to speak?

I am using the tankadin mod, it tells me how much Ardent Defender mitigates and how many times it has saved me. Sure it won't mitigate a huge percentage, but it has made the difference between life and death on multiple key occasions. This talent is essentially a passive last stand, well worth taking.

I haven't read all the 7 pages of replies to this thread, so forgive me if it's been mentioned already, but surely the "deaths saved" figure is liable to miss certain death-saving scenarios.

Scenario 1: You have 3000 HP left. You recieved 2800 damage, which would have been 4000 had you not got AD, and so AD has saved your life. Great. I suspect AD-death-save-trackers would count this.

Scenario 2: You have 3000 HP left. You recieve 2000 HP of damage, which would have been 2850 damage if you had not got AD, so would not have killed you anyway. However, you then recieve a heal for 4000 HP, which raise you HP and 'de-activates' AD. You now have 6000 HP, (without AD you'd have 5150). If you then get hit for 5200 damage, you don't die, and only because you had AD active previously. But presumably this would not register on an AD-deaths-saved counter?

Yes, it has been stated in this thread already the AD Save counters on mods typically underestimate saves for various reasons.

Saved me for sure last night in ZA, tanking one of those giant trolls one the way to hexlord. I couldn't see anything showing on my life meter so it must have only been a 100hp or so Rolling Eyes
