Testing Improved Crusader Talent - Inconclusive

Ok, here is another example.

Starting stats:
10% d/p/m (assuming hit capped and some expertise)
30% crit

this leaves 60% hit if we ignore glancing blows (they will provide similar results)

Say you take 1000 swings and each swing hits for 1000 normal and 2000 critical.

100 swings will be d/p/m and give 0 dmg
300 swings will be crits and give 600000 dmg
600 swings will be hits and give 600000 dmg
-------------
1200000 dmg total

Now assume you have imp. sotc up, reducing hit by 3% and increasing crit by 3%:

100 swings will be d/p/m and give 0 dmg
330 swings will be crits and give 660000 dmg
570 swings will be hits and give 570000 dmg
------------------
1230000 dmg total

The increase in damage from what you were doing is:

1230000/1200000 = 1.025

Or 2.5% dmg increase (not 3%)

Man, I'm just confusing myself now trying to figure out why my numbers are coming out different. With your numbers, I get that 3.33% more attacks that land should be crits instead of hits. Which they are, 3.33% of 900 is 30. What I don't get is how that's only resulting in 2.5% increased damage. I'm probably just missing something painfully obvious somewhere.

If you have 30 attacks becoming crits, and a crit is double damage, you can simplify a crit to be worth two hits. So you're adding 60 hits and subtracting 30, which should be the same as just adding 30 hits. Which is still 3.33% of 900 landing hits.

If a hit does 1000 damage, then 30 hits would be worth 30,000 damage. Which shows in your numbers. 30,000 is 2.5% of 1,200,000.

Why does adding 30 hits not cause 3.33% more damage? This is what's confusing me.

Stupid math.

Another way to think about it.

You said that 3.33% more crits was like adding 30 more hits (60 from crits - 30 from hits).

30 more hits than what? Where did you start? How many "effective hits" did you have to begin with and how many do you have now. It's like saying that "Turkey is exactly five miles from" without saying where or from which portion of turkey you are measuring from (the eastern border, the capital, the center, etc.)

sure it is 30 more effective attacks, but you have to know how many effective attacks you had before. In the example, you had 300 crits and 600 hits, or 1200 effective hits out of 900 attacks. your 3.33% more crits was with respect to the 900, not the 1200. The actual damage you do is with respect to the 1200, and not the 900. The 900 is how many damaging swings you landed, while the 1200 is what it looked like to the target in terms of damage.

EDIT: I was too slow in posting. Darn you Lore. Smile

Or we could just judge wisdom, and let our pocket Retadin judge Crusader.
