AS uses melee mechanics for both hit and crit

Dorvan,

This is somewhat tangential, but don't forget SA threat. When you look at a WWS parse, you look at your damage done to break down how much threat from each, but don't forget to look down at the bottom at SA mana returns and add in 1/2 that as threat. (Assuming we're single-target tanking here, yes?)

Or, just call it 1/20th of the incoming DPS if you know that.

It's totally unaffected by any stats (other than soaking more/less damage... Wink ), but it will reduce the proportion of threat from other sources.

Interesting thread, few points.

a) The amount of threat affected by +hit/Expertise seems to be chosen at random. How did you get 40%? Also, this number would be incorrect for any level of gear apart from the one being chosen to calculate the numbers. The majority of our threat does not scale at the same rate.

b) With SpellCrit affecting TPS, while it currently isn't viable, with WotLK we'll be able to spec 0/41/30 for a threat based build [I think it'd be within our reach to do a crit every 30s]. So I think that it's stupid to say ______ isn't a threat stat, when it does provide threat. Much like Str/AP. They do provide threat, but it'd be useless to stack them as they scale so badly. That being said, I think you should include all stats which increase Paladin threat, just so we have a reference if we need it.

I've seen a couple parses indicating 35% is a reasonable approximation for SoR + threat, so that's the number I went with. I'm more than happy to see evidence that this assumption is a poor one.

When WotLK comes out, a lot of stuff will have to be re-written. While there are other stats that make some contribution to our threat, such contributions are small enough that it's not worth taking them seriously when trying to gear yourself for threat. I could come up with an estimate of exactly how small the contributions of strength and agility are to Pally threat, but it's not worth the trouble: the contributions are tiny, and that ballpark should be good enough for anyone to make gear decisions on.

Very interesting numbers from the angle of where we get our threat from, but I also read that in 2.3 +hit will now effect the targets ability to resist a taunt.

So while spell dam is still king, could an arguement be made for a min amount of effective hit in order to minimize taunt resists? Taunt resists seem to be annoyingly common for me. As we are essentially spell tanks, do we use hit like warriors do or perhaps spell hit instead?

On the topic of RD, I would like to see some conclusive testing done proving that RD is NOT affected by Spell Hit... because I'm not willing to just believe that it isn't because of the patch notes. Similarly I would like to see some testing done to see if Taunt/RD/Growl have a 9% (melee) or 17%(spell) miss against L73 targets.

On the topic of Expertise, I have found SoV to finally be reliable for general use with 3/3 Precision + 15 Expertise. I got that using Human racial + CE + Badge Bracers. I'm enjoying it so far.

As for Threat i've seen Holy Shield, Ret Aura, SOR Judgements, Blessing of Santuary, Vengeance Card every single one of those i've seen completely resisted on mobs and on a single mob all in the same fight and it wasn't even a boss happened on a regular lvl 71 mob. I've screenshots some of those pics. I've even seen Exorcism completely resisted twice in Arcatraz and had to look to make sure it happened in my log and that was on a pull i casted that and completely was resisted.

I would think being able to reduce mob resistance to holy damage is a increase in your overall threat output when everything is hitting vs been resisted or partially resisted.

i've been debating whether or not I want to roll on that eye of magtheridon now that we've started mags lair. Would be nice indeed if it procced off ret aura, holy shield etc.

Also, this thread has made me think again about getting the badge bracers, though boots are still next on my hit list.

ps, sorry for necro bump, but this is good information. Smile

SoR can get partial resists btw, see it plenty of times. From SCD I see stuff like {43} 99 now and then (my normal SoR damage would in this case be 142), I assume that's a partial resist?
