'Leapfrogging' threat

I did patchwerk 10man last night with a DK OT who was struggling to maintain threat over the dps, I told him to taunt off me as often as possible and I'd then i'd taunt back in an attempt to 'leapfrog' threat

in my understanding a taunt will put you on the same threat as the current target then its up to you to get the 10% increase to maintain threat. this way he could sort of leach off of my threat, so to speak.

i'm not sure if it worked as he never pulled agro off me, either he wasnt doing it or couldnt overcome the 10% but we killed it fine that attempt

also i was on a shitty backup pc so i didnt have omen up and running at the time so i'm really posting this without the backup info.

my question being is this a valid tactic for fights like patchwerk, i would think it doesnt really matter who is MT and who wears hateful strikes as long as we stay 1and2 in threat - can tanks 'leapfrog' threat off each other like this to get a really nice buffer over the raid and let them really open up the dps sooner?

Well, the way I understand that it works is that if he taunts off you, it will equalize the threat, and switch the aggro to the taunting person. On patch, you'll both still be showing aggro and taking damage, just it'll switch who is MT and who is eating hatefuls.

My warrior co-tank and I often, on dps intensive fights, alternate CDs to boost threat more... For instance, I'll blow wings, BV trink, etc on the pull for a brief 30 secs of insane threat, then he'll taunt off me and blow his CDs. It works well on things that require two tanks on the same boss, and lets the DPS blow their CDs early. For an added boost, we usually time his threat phase with our highest DPS getting all his CDs.. IE the fury warrior with vigilance on him getting Hysteria, etc. I don't know how much it actually helps, but we are unusual in the fact that we think very much in terms of "tank threat", not my threat or his, and love trying to think of out-of-the-box ways to synergize our tanking.

I thought patchwerk was taunt immune, but on other fights that technique should work to artificially raise agro.

He very well could be... I don't think we've ever tried taunting him.

I'm fairly certain he's taunt immune. On Heroic the other night, we had some healer issues which meant that I (as hateful tank) was eating floor quite often. We run druid heavy, so I'd get battle-ressed and run back in and taunt to get me back up as a potential hateful target...did nothing.

Patchwerk is pretty easy mode in 10 man, if it works then good for you. But 25 I wouldn't recommend this strategy at all, as he hits much harder.

This is a fun thing to do on Archavon, and play roulette to see which tank gets tossed.

There have definitely been a few fights where our OT will taunt off me just to get the threat boost. He'll usually let me build up some initial threat, then warn me and taunt to catch up.

Then there's our DK DPS. I like that warrior's can't cast their taunts unless they're in defensive stance. DKs however... Let's just say that when the DK pulls agro and takes a bunch of damage and claims he didn't do anything when he's the only person within 500k threat of me, we don't invite them back. Smile

Oh, a refresher on how taunts work: Taunts do two things:

    1. They set you to have threat equal to the highest threat target of the mob.
    2. They force the target to agro you for the next 3 (usually) seconds.

If the 3-second debuff wears off the mob will recalculate agro normally, agroing anyone with 110%/130% of your threat if there is such a person.

If you tank swap on Gluth you'll see how you quickly get to the point where after the taunt the other tank can't generate 10% more threat than the current total before they should taunt anyway, and at that point you basically don't have to worry about threat for the rest of the fight.

We will do this sometimes on Grand Widow as well. If for whatever reason one of the OT's go down, or the SP dies from the rain of fire or is a newbie and can't MC the sac target, our 4th tank (we have four in the guild and run four, im not raid leader) and i will taunt her across the room, back and forth and kite her a bit while she's enraged. Kind of funny to watch and it only works 1/3 of the time but its good in a pinch! Very Happy

Hateful strike has a threat component.

If your dps goes easy until the DK takes a few hatefuls, it's hard to imagine them catching up. And if they can, the better solution to the problem is to help the DK out with what they are doing wrong rather than use some elaborate strategy to get around his shortcomings.

At some point on hard content it's going to be important that the DK be able to play a little.
