Confused Block not a avoidence stat ?

Hail my fellow tankadins Smile
Ive been told by a shammy that Block is not avoidence and should not count towards my overall avoidence because these are his words ...''Block is mitigation not avoidance Wink ...unless the mob hitting you is hitting for less than your block value which isnt likely for a boss.''
so do i count it like i always have or not ? i always thought that avoidence was to avoid crit hits and crushing blows so it should count ....but where Block it is a dmg reduction does it count ?

Block only mitigates part of a hit, equal to your block value, unlike dodge, parry, and miss, which avoid damage entirely. Block is not avoidance.

Block is counted towards what we call "block cap", which is a combined avoidance and block chance of 102.4%, the point at which a raid boss-level mob will be unable to land an unblocked hit.

As for crits and crushes, crits are removed by getting enough Defence skill to reduce your chance to be crit by 5.6% vs a boss-level mob - at 80, this is 540 Defence. Crushing blows can only be delivered by mobs that are 4 or more levels above you, so at 80 you will never receive one.

It's hit avoidance, but not pure avoidance. It's confusing I know, but you're going to see people say 102.4% avoidance for block cap, and they're including block in that. I just say pure avoidance when talking about dodge/parry/miss only.

I consider blocking mitigation. The damage is coming in you're just mitigating it. Avoidance is avoidance the damage in the first place.

mitigation - limiting damage
avoidance - 0 damage taken

mitigation: armor, block (when not blocking the full amount), shields/bubbles of various sorts that do not prevent full damage

avoidance: dodge, parry, block (when it blocks the full amount), being missed

more avoidance = more chance to have that lucky streak of not getting hit (lots of overhealing, but with luck can survive streaks without heals)
more mitigation = more predictable damage intake (less spikes, easier to heal by a pally or non-reactive healer)

Block is not avoidance. It's simple like that. Even fully blocked hits are still hits(on-hit procs still proc on full blocks, but not on dodges, parries and misses).

You use block rating to push normal hits off the table, just that.

Fair enough, technically a parry would avoid the entire damage but still be a hit (in lament's term a clank rather than a whoosh Wink )

My colorful example made me wonder about the damage to weapon, Guess a purist could consider parry as an hybrid avoidance/mitigation.

Most people refer to avoidance as damage avoidance, but then mitigation would be partial avoidance. I personnaly prefer to think as avoided hits.

I still see parry as avoidance as the weapon deflects the hit (explaining full damage avoidance) where block takes the brunt of the force from the said hit (why block is limited by block value as opposed to parry which is limitless).

However, such subtleties, as much as I enjoy them, don't belong in a basic training thread. Therefore I stand by my basic clank/whoosh theory. Mr. Green

So parry would be something like *tink* Laughing

(apologies to the old batman series would be in order here)
