Are You Ready for Heroics and/or Naxx? Look Here!

In order to (hopefully) cut down on the number of threads asking whether people are ready for heroics/Naxx, I'm going to put a short note here:

What you need for heroics is 535 defence, 20k HP and 20k armor Unbuffed. Yes, there is a little leeway in this. No, you can't go in with 16k hp, 17k armor and 500 defense. For Naxx, you need 540 defence. The EH value this setup will give you will do nicely for heroics, while Raid Buffs will pad out your HP enough to let you function well in a 25-man (since they'll take you up to about 27k+).

If you don't reach this, it's fairly simple to do. Get a couple of gems and enchants for defence (with regard to the guides on the other forum), and, if all else fails, get on some Tempered Saronite and The Daunting Legs and Gloves, which are itemised for almost nothing else and will do you nicely.

If you're a little short, one final option is the Lesser Flask of Toughness, which offers 0.62% crit reduction. Another possibility is the Elixir of Mighty Defense (sic), which is worth 9.15 Defence skill.

If you want more specific advice, you'll still need to post Outside this post.

BAD FROG! It is now a case of them being itemised for defence, as opposed to it being itemised for defence. Thusly, it should be written "whi are" as opposed to "which is".

Never ever imprecate my perfect grammar again.

i just disagre with those numbers

i went to my first Utgarde with far less Def, i was under 500,my HP pool was 20.500, and my hit table was like around 40%hit and 2+%critk
my group was around same ilvl.

we ran the instance quite well.
Except the last boss. the Drag put me in trouble. i gemmed a new loot which gave me more HP, and then was able to survive 2 hit during the enrage time : enought time for my heal. and we owned her. it was rude, but we did it.

With this same gear, i also MT2 naxx10 for the whole plague area

i would say as a recommandation : start with utgarde as soon as possible and check by yourself what your current gear allow you (i suggest to do it first time with guild or friend, just warn everybody it is a try)

and then, once you feel more confortable, got some more upgrade (yea go for normal too with friends, finish your quests too) just target the next step : Nexus, Drak'theron

it is the instances which tell you if you are ready or not.
just have in mind : what the point to go in heroic already over-geared ^^ no challenge, no loot upgrade...

500 def is a really bad idea - either you were very lucky OR your healers were awesome OR both. There's simply no valid reason to disagree with the stats mentioned in the original post. I'm guessing the requirements mentioned assume that the whole group is at or around the same gear lvl as the main tank.

Anubis is right and 535 defense and 20k health wasn't difficult, and I was still wearing my crafted 70 belt. Yes you might have to spend some money but nothing insanely expensive.

I have all blue items at 79 and am 555 def, 20.7K HP and 21K armor, have the crafted epic sheild to put on at 80, and i didnt have to do a hell of alot to be ready as soon as I ding 80 ....

Why chance it if you dont have to?

that's the point.

yes i admit, for a short period of time, i was a potential dangerous tank  healers were not allowed to take vacation, nor the dps
but i survived enought to be fast rewarded with good loot, and now, i've just reach 546 def and 25k+ i'm just more reliable

i understand some prefer to spend more time building a bullet-proof gear and lowering as much as possible the tank failure.
i had not that much time to spend on wow

Well the issue is that you can reach uncrittable simply by wearing the crafted blues, honored wyrmrest gear, quest reward weapon, neck and a rings or two if you enchant properly (don't even need shoulder or head rep enchants).

It's kinda like digging up a yard without knowing were the gas and power lines are because you didn't want to travel accross town to pick up the plans. Sure you're saving time but you're also putting everyone at risk when you could have delayed the project for a day.

EDIT: Here's a link to a set of gearthat doesn't include rings that nets you 611/665 needed for heroic uncritability. The reamianing 54 defense can be made up with rings slots, or defense enchants to your chest, shield and cloak.

I did my first H Gun'Drak with 536 def, 21k health, and 21k armor. It was tough, but doable. We wiped at least once on all but two bosses (mammoth and eck).

I did my first H UP with 545 def, 22k health, and 22k armor, it was easy. Only one wipe on the last boss because the healer didn't see the orb, and the mage died once.

After observing a few other instances I can say that healer and DPS skill is actually very important. On a lot of these bosses it seems like DPS needs to have good numbers or you and the healer will just get worn out too quickly with some stacking buff/debuff. The healer has to be decent because there will be some spikes on some bosses and they have to watch the environment because there are a lot of special effects.

This is a good benchmark for you, but make sure the rest of your group is decent as well.
