Wayward Footman vs Merc Glad

I love tanking. This post needs to open with that. Also, I'm good at math. For some reason, some of the math here makes no sense to me though.

My question is this: I have a Shield of the Wayward Footman and a Merciless Gladiator's Shield Wall. Both have the 18 stam chant on it.

Why is the Merciless Gladiator's better? In Maintankadin my avoidance drops when equipping the Merc Glad and my overall uncrushability goes down as well!

Slightly confused why it's better. If you can explain why, I can use that to make further decisions as well

Wayward footmen is just for getting to and if needed maintaining uncrushable.

Once you are above 102.4 and 490 defence (tiny bit less with the resil on the shield)merc glad owns wayward in every way.

Actually, I noticed that the MErc Glad makes me uncrittable, which the Wayward didn't do. I guess that alone makes it worth while eh?

The Merciless Gladiator's Shield Wall is SO much better in the realm of stamina and armor than the Shield of the Wayward Footman that I would suggest regemming or renchanting something else for avoidance and wearing it over the Wayward Footman.

It's not your math that's the problem, you are just making the same mistake that many tanks do - you are completely focusing on stats and forgetting about armor value.

The main thing that makes Merciless Gladiator's shield good is the armor value.

Shields have way more armor than any other piece of equipment, and the Merc shield has fully 2000 more armor than Shield of The Wayward footman.

There are a lot of upgrades that seem like sidegrades until you take armor value into account.

until you are uncrushable with holy shield, wayward is better, glad shields have OBSCENE armor and health, but they have no avoidance

Even if you still needed to use the wayward to remain uncrushable, I'd toss a 15 block rating enchant on the S2 shield and vendor the blue one, picking up the missing 1.5% or so avoidance elsewhere. The effective health given by the S2 shield is completely OP compared to the Footman.

That extra armor on the MGSW will make you take a lot less damage from every hit that lands, and the block value helps a lot against non-raid mobs that don't hit too hard.

The Wayward Footman is only good in comparison because it stacks so much avoidance/uncrush. So use it if you need uncrush, but use the MGSW otherwise.

Also, because of its item level the MGSW has a lot more stamina, armor, and BV. You can make up the other stats elsewhere to replace the SotWF, and you'll have more total stats if you have the MGSW on.

While in most cases the answer is "Use the tools to get uncrushable then worry about health" this is not such a case. The benefit is SO huge from using this shield that you'd be better off making up the avoidance elsewhere.

Only ever use shield of the wayward solider if it has the SHIELD BLOCK enchant, since its completely useless to enchant stamina onto a shield you'll only be using to get uncrushable. If you're at the stage where you are using this shield, then 1.9% towards uncrushable will be much more useful than a measly 18 stamina
Its much better to instead of enchant this with stam, get a better shield and enchant that with block rating, as they will likely end up with a similar amount of uncrushability and stamina, except you will be gaining at least a thousand armor, and probably a decent amount of block value as well.

MGSW + Block enchant > Wayward soldier with Stam, you cant beat the stam difference
