Which Chest Enchant

I don't know why people are wondering if defense is still good or not even when uncrit capped.

Even while uncrittable defense rating offers nearly as much avoidance as dodge rating.

100 dodge rating gives you a %5.29 chance to dodge. Total avoidance %5.29
100 defense rating gives you a %1.70 chance to dodge, parry, miss, and block, which is %5.10 avoidance AS WELL AS %1.70 block.

As a protection paladin with kings it would take 11.7 stamina to make that 150 health on your chest.

Now think about this for a second:
When gear is created, a certain amount of iLevel points are spent on a socket, so according to blizzard all sockets are equal, which means all gems are equal. If all gems are equal then 15 stam = 10 defense rating.

Now given the choice between 11.7 stamina(150hp) and 15 defense rating, which would you choose? In the case of a prot pally it would take 22.5 stam(288hp with kings) to = 15 defense rating.

Another thing to consider would be bracers. If 15 stam = 10 defense rating then what should you choose? 12 stam or 12 defense rating?

If you look at it as purely avoidance and mitigation then imo Ulu's original post of the order for the 3 Chest enchants is correct however I prefer to think of them in this order instead:

+15 def > +6 Stats > +150 Health

Defense is awesome because, as has been said, it gives you that extra 'wiggle' room to move your gear around.

+6 Stats, whilst not being great for mitigation and damage soaking at first glance and on the pure maths side of things pretty poor looking I prefer it to +150 health. It's a jack of all trades enchant, it gives a little health, a little mana, a little agility, etc; it's not terrible but it's not great either.

+150 Health, imo at MH/BT level isn't really going to cut it... sure 150 health is nice but considering your average boss will be belting you for 2k+ after mitigation 150 health 'aint gonna help you much.

At the end of the day though it's going to be down to personal choice but I'll always go with +15 Defense.

I like the +15 def enchant, it definately gives you wiggle room, and allows, dependent on drops and your personal aptitude for certain elements of the game, you to consider the following options, for given situations

S1 Shoulders
S1 Shield
PvP Boots
+ any other items you might want, but are scared of using because of lack of +def.

I can now afford to sacrifice the 150/100 health from chest, and am seriously considering the +15 def enchant.

The fail in this thread comes from one thing: higher ilvl does not always mean better.

+150 hp stick on my chest. "Drop in the bucket" person is silly. Every little upgrade is a drop in the bucket. Drops fill the bucket.

And just to screw with you all some more....

In Sunwell:

Parry > Defense > Agi > Dodge
(*as far as avoidance stats go)
