skull or ruin gives you 38 bonus block value but it has 10 less innate BV than WoT so really only a net gain of 28 block value. it's actually even less because WoT has 13 more strength than SoR so that's another 10 BV or so counting talents. So really in terms of raw BV you're getting less than 20 more BV by going with skull of ruin but you're giving up

-13 strength
-360 armor
-15 def rating
-24 dodge rating
-6 block rating

WoT is ulduar item level whereas skull of ruin is only heroic level gear. I think even for a threat set there are limits to the disparity in item level you should reach to.

These are just my thoughts on the matter, do what you will.

Yeah, I picked one up last night and took a closer look at it.

It's a trade off of -29.9 AP and -14.9 STR for +20.5 BV (assuming both have the +40 bv armor plating).

Guess it's going in the bank along with all my other shields ...

In the interest of building the "ultimate" block set, even tho str is nice for boosting your threat/BV, i still think its more usefull having stamina instead.
Sure, go for BV gearparts, in every slot if you can.
But its not worth having 16str gems in prismatic sockets, since you still want some sta to survive. Otherwise youll end up with 2.5k BV and 16k HP... (8str/12sta in red slots if you want the socketbonus, if you really feel a need for boosting BV with such a tiny amount)
IMO, BV from gear, sta from gems.
You might say "BV is a form of sta", since 1BV in a way= 1 more HP, that doesnt have to be healed up, so in that case 1BV > 1HP, thing is, you can choose from 16str (8BV +kings) or 24sta (240hp+talents+kings).
So if 1sta is 10hp, then 10BV is worth 1 sta, sure, its mitigated dmg, so dont need to be healed up. But when choosing gems, str gems doesnt cut it agains Sta. Bare in mind, since youll be using BoSanc, its not even sure you will get kings.
I got 1700BV unbuffed in my "Heroic/trash" gear, and 28.8k HP, In heroics Trash dont hit for much more than 1700 (then add buffs and libram 5/8 sec)
You might take 200-500dmg/hit after block, but if you would go all out for BV, you would still take some dmg, and have less HP to handle a few spells/aoe effects, also stunns are not to unknown in heroics.
I swap on my heavy HP gear on bosses that hit for about 6k or more, since then you want more avoidance, higher HP for the buffert (spell fights maybe but AD trigger aswell).
If the boss hits you for 10k, 500 BV wont do that much, while if the boss hits for 4k, removing half that dmg is better ofc (when using BV gear), but you still need some sta.

Going all out on for BV for tanking raidbosses, is NOT recomended, you might still survive, but thats not thanks to your amazingly high BV, its thanks to the "easy" content any fresh lvl 80 with BS tankingparts could tank.

Going Str/BV is not recommended unless you know what you're doing, and (probably) have everything on farm. It's like the oddball talent builds: If you aren't sure what to do, use a cookie cutter.

Once you know what you're doing, feel free to do what works for you and your raid.

Unfortunately they ninja nerfed the BC gem to 5%.

I dont want to start my own thread for something that is right on topic with what is being discussed here, so i'll just put this here.

http://www.chardev.org/?template=139018

Is the set i'm very close to completing. Being a JC, i'm very lucky to be able to itemize +27 strength gems in a few slots and +41 in others.

I'm pretty sure that this is the only way i will be able to gear for block rating/value and that I dont expect this set to be my Main tanking set. This would more or less be for large trash packs, and most certainly for Sarth 3d.

as u can see I've chosen to gem a 41 stam in the pants as well as a soveriegn. this is where my biggest concern is. Should i go with two +24 stams in those slots and put a dragonseye else where? or should i go with two soveriegns? Any thoughts

The block value on that set is pretty hefty imo and i'm wondering if that is adequate to deal with whelps. With that set i am able to tank some of the trash in spider wing without heals....

Whelps hit for a bit under 1500. BV over that may not be necessary -- depends on what you're doing. I wear more BV to deal with Blazes as well, but honestly 1500 is probably plenty for just whelp duty.

Ive changed that chardev a bit (its not a must, just my 2 cents):
http://www.chardev.org/?template=139214
Mostly changed a few gems, the specc (you are not gonna do kings on that fight.. nor any other fight, unless your the only paladin in the raid, and its not even always best to take it over sanc anyway... also the movementspeed is nice)
You will loose like 100BV, gain about 100Sta (it is a spelldmg fight, one where you can block the normal meele spelldmg, but can you really run around with your front to all the mobs, all the time?)
Only item ive changed is the trinket.
Greatness with agi? (might just be the wrong greatness trinket, i guess you meant the Str one) anyway, its not worth much for BV trinket.
Take the VH one if you manage to farm it (its use offers a lot, whelps shouldnt be the problem, but enraged adds at the same time, it helps a lot)
BR is godly when aoetanking, especially with 1700+ unbuffed BV.

Re: Building the Ultimate Block Set (TM)

Is the consensus that post 3.2 a big block set will still only be for the OT in places like Ulduar and beyond?

Sorry to the OP, but i'm suing you for trademark infringement.

I infact have the Ultimate Block Set (TM) already and market it as so.

Re: Building the Ultimate Block Set (TM)

Vadis, If you are infact in your MT set and not a block set...you may want to grind some heroics and get some craftable epics to replace alot of that block junk

Re: Building the Ultimate Block Set (TM)

A have a full BV set I use for heroics and Naxx, for threat purposes I try and mantain hit cap, but otherwise i have around 2100 BV with no procs or buffs, and I am still trying to get a darkmoon card. If your only goal was max BV ignoring other stats. Assuming Blacksmith/JC I got up to 2459 Block Value and around 29k health, you need access to Ulduar Hard mode, but whatever it occupied me for 15 minutes

For that you need to gem/enchant pretty much straight strength

Couldnt get that chardev website to link it but Id use

T7.5 Helm
Necklace of Unerring Mettle
T8.5 Shoulders
Shadow of the Ghoul
Unbreakable Chestguard
Bindings of Hapless Prey
T8.5 Gloves
Dragonslayer's Brace
Wyrmguard Legplates
Inexorable Sabatons
Signet of the Earthshaker
Fate's Cluth
Darkmoon Card Greatness
Heart of Iron

Sorthalis
The Skull of Ruin

All strength gems/enchants except the minimum def enchants to be capped, puts the set at 2459, could be a bit higher if you use the ruby hare with str gems over heart of iron

Considering this is a discussion of Block sets, any increase is an increase. Ilevel is worthless when not applied to the stats your are after. FINALLY. when 3.2 hits Skull of Ruin is even MORE of an increase over WoT.
