490...102.4...3.0...

From what I have always found online, you want 490 def to be uncritable and 102.4 total avoidance to be uncrushable. Looking at the combat table, I have never understood why 490 def makes you crit proof, but you can still be under 102.4 total avoidance and thus be crushable.... since crushing blows are lower on the table than crits. Is what I found online flawed?

2nd question- in 3.0 Crushing blows in raids are going bye bye. Does this effect the required 490 or 102.4? I wouldn't think so because it is just the next thing on the table to be pushed off, but as you can tell from my first question - splitting critable and crushable confuses me. I guess I just don't see why 102.4 total avoidance and say... 430 def won't do the trick.

defense directly removes crits, that's why at 490 def you're uncrittable: You reduced the crit chance to be equal or greater than the boss' crit chance.

Defense needs didn't and probably won't change at 3.0. Crushings are gone so 102,4% avoidance + block can be ignored.

Crit immunity works by different rules that crush immunity, in that crits can be converted into normal hits by Defense skill, whilst the only way to remove crushes is to push them off the attack table.

Crits are based exclusively on your level and the mob level (and in some very rare cases, special abilities). So at 70 (regardless of 2.x or 3.x ) you'll need 490 to be crit immune versus 'skull' or +3 bosses (ie raid bosses).

Versus +2 mobs you only need 485, 480 versus +1 mobs - worth noting when tanking resist fights currently.

At 71 it will be 495/490/485 for +3/+2/+1 respectively
...
At 80 it will be 540/535/530 for +3/+2/+1 respectively

The important part of leveling isn't that the defense minimum goes up (since 5/level is trivial) but that defense rating scales downward hard as you level up.

If you *just* get to 490 in 3.0 at 70, then when you ding 71 (provided you don't pick up any more defense rating) - you're not only crittable to 74's (+3's), but to to 73's, 72's and as far down as the scaling of ratings gets you.

Re: 490...102.4...3.0...

Err, 490 is relative to your level. Defense works by comparing the attacker's weapon skill(which is always 5*lvl for mobs, lucky bastards) to the defender's defense. Two things will happen as you level to 80:

1. Your defense will drop, because defense rating will convert to less actual defense, just as crit rating converts to less crit and so on.

2. Your defense will also go up, because your natural defense skill gets skill-ups when you get hit(max defense skill at 70 is 350.. it will be 400 at 80).

A level 83 mob has 415 weapon skill, so to push crits off the table, you will need 540 defense.

Mouse-over your defense statistic on the character sheet, it specifically states that it directly reduces your chance to be critically hit. NPC's have a base 5% chance to crit, increased by .2% per level over the target they are attacking. Bosses function as lv 73, thus have a 5.6% chance to crit. Players have 350 base defense skill at lv 70, and each subsequent skill rank reduces chance to be crit by .04%. Hence, you need 140 additional defense skill to remove that 5.6%, giving the 490 figure.

The logic behind still needing 490 defense even with block/parry/dodge/miss filling the combat table is that usually that's active mitigation, not passive mitigation. Thus, if you take a hit while stunned, from behind, or while holy shield is down, your 102.4% isn't really 102.4%, leaving you vulnerable to crushing blows / critical hits. Defense/Resilience reduce crit intake regardless of those factors, and thus it functions as a fallback for crit immunity even in the rare cases where you're not really crush immune.

Re: 490...102.4...3.0...

+140 defense = 689 defense rating at 80 btw. Which sucks.
