Effulgent, effulgent, effulgent, effulgent.

There's a reason it takes the longest to get.

+21 Def and 5% block is what I run with, 21 defense is ~3 actual defense which is nice, 32 stam is a loss, but at my current gear stage I like having the defense flexibility (and yes I have gemmed straight gems atm, and half not superiors since I haven't gotten decent gear in slot yet Razz).

Frankly, couple of points to bring up.

First off, on Efflugent Earthsiege...valuable sure, but only in specific encounters ie spell damage ones.

If your boss tanking, Austere wins hands down,

If your trash tanking (melee) or need the extra defense then Eternal wins.

2nd point.

People keep talking about gem value and ignore DR.

What they dont seem to realize is that by the time your crit capped (540 defense) you are already experiencing diminishing returns.

The avoidance variance between the two gems (dodge/agi) is also subject to diminishing returns. This means that the more you stack avoidance, the closer the two get.

From a pure avoidance viewpoint, dodge is and will always remain better.

BUT the agi gem is also providing AC (not subject to diminishing returns) and melee crit.

For example:

Now, lets say you have 300 dodge rating and are at defense cap...you are getting about 6.44% dodge value from all that rating.

Now, lets say insteady you got 300 agi from gear, you will get:

Before kings: 4.94% dodge value, 600 armor and 5.76% increase to your melee crit

With kings: 5.49% dodge value, 660 armor and 6.34% increase to your melee crit.

Frankly, as tanks we would be much better off in some ways with Agi on our gear instead of dodge.

The crit does not suffer DR. Only defensive stats have that property and not all of them (block and resilence).

I made a port to exodar. My friend proceeds to MD Alar onto the AFK tank, and we both run. People ran with us, until the port, and realised it was to exodar. Only three of us went through. Turns out people would rather die than go to exodar. -Infurnus

Hello Dragnar!

To your question:

The conversion for dodge rating points -> avoidance is far better. That is because parry offers you a reduced swing timer for your next melee hit (which is why two-handering DDs get tempted with parry in their tree, which of course is of little use to them unless PvPing). Parry increases DPS, and quite notably if you have a sluggish but big hitting two hander.

So 30% parry would be superiour to 30% dodge. To reflect this, you need to stack far more points of parry rating to get to the same percentile value.

Now, we as a tank usually are after survivability first, so for our intents and purposes, dodge rating is better than parry rating point by point, until such a point where the diminishing returns see that you get more avoidance through parry rating than dodge rating.

Which, according to what's flung around here, is 600 dodge rating with 0 parry rating.

In short, with parry we have to pay point credits for an aspect of the rating we're not really interested in: more DPS (minor TPS for us, since it's just white damage). Dodge focusses all its point credits on our sought after avoidance.
