priest healing questions

so my guild has a coh priest that's new to raiding and is being 'groomed' i guess you could say to being our raid healer next to our tree who is top notch at keeping tanks alive (solo healed saph for 50% last week). however after checking recount on a few fights they usually looked something like this.

druid: 1.9 million healed, 800k over heal
priest: 700k healed, 1.6 million over heal

also they tend to run oom rather fast. we usually run with 3 healers in a 10s focused guild, holy pally being the third who can't stand healing and wants to do his 3k dps. besides our dps is solid and 3 healers are sorta overkill for a lot. i read a lot of the thread on EJ for priest healing but i don't really know the "style" of a priest if you will so i can't really tell why they're going oom when the druid still has 80% mana or why they have such ridiculous over heal.

one thing i was thinking was just poor reaction time and hitting a heal after the druid did and being late on the cast. the other is simply panicking and casting coh on every CD regardless of if it was needed. or just using G heal on anybody and everybody. one other thing i suggested was to set health bars to %s rather than numbers since all the dps and healers have roughly the same total it'll be an easy association for like 85% = flash heal or 40% = G heal. they're generally good at standing on bad stuff and use CD's effectively (ie when they are actually needed).

i don't have an armory link but the name is Bedroomeyez on shadowmoon server (us server) and the druid is Cluckster on the same server. their gems and enchants might be different than what shows but comment on it anyways if something is being done wrong. so i guess my question mainly is what is the most likely cause of insane over heal for a holy priest and mana regen issues compared to a druid that's running on nearly infinite along with a generic stat priority (i can figure out how much of X = Y just not what to focus on).

Do you have a WWS that you can post from the raid? That'd be a big help to see what it is he is doing the most.

I have a priest alt that's holy (Kvasar, Spirestone US) and I really don't see that many mana issues anymore, but I will say that when I was starting in Naxx it was somewhat difficult to not go OOM. Is he stopcasting when appropriate? I've noticed that since I started to stopcast more frequently when precasting GHeal, It's helped my mana greatly.

Holy priest is really about renew/pom/pws, and obviously it depends on each fight, but you should be using these spells as frequently as possible. PoH CoH FH and GH are used, but recount should be showing Renew and PoM as the top abilites used. I found it difficult at first going to priest healing as I'm used to just spamming heals on my paladin and topping people off; as a Druid/Priest it's all about letting your hots kick in as much as possible to boost your hps and total healing done. I've not been beaten on healing done by any healer in my guild (as far as alt runs go anyways). That EJ thread feels somewhat outdated, as it states to never ever use flash heal; I however find myself using the spell somewhat frequently.

As far as gear goes, if he can go with more spirit than anything it will help with his mana regen. IMO gemming for SP is a bad idea as it does not help whatsoever with mana regen, while spirit gives you both regen as well as SP.

My gf plays a priest and recently found out that the "gem for spirit!" philosophy is incorrect, I can't really explain it all myself but the short version was basically balance int and spirit because of the way mana regen changed. Check out EJ or dwarfpriest.com for better explanations.

My biggest problem with priest healing (on my alt) is that if you're healing alongside someone who is a regular healer, or that healer is their main, you have a lot less reaction speed or experience to know when to heal or which heal to use. I do a horrific amount of overhealing against people who are a) better geared than me, and b) have a healer as their main, or c) Druids. Why is this? Because I'm trying to force heals while they're just letting renew/hots work for them. With druids they do an awful lot of of hots, so by the time my heal lands, chances are their hot has brought that player back up to (near) full health.

Another issue may be how much haste the druid has. If the druid has a boatload of haste, and the priest has near none, it's going to be harder for that priest to land his heals since he'll have to be always ahead of the druid in terms of casting. (FYI - I don't even know if druids use haste or if it's on their gear, I'm just taking a stab at this.)

I suspect his mana issues probably have more to do with that he doesn't use the FSR properly. Proper use of stopcasting if the target is on full HP does wonders.

I don't think anyone will gem for spirit anymore after the 3.1 changes to mana regen though since the entire point was to exploit the fuck out of the FSR with clearcasting and stopcasting and since that's not possible anymore the relative value of spirit compared to intellect for mana becomes rather low.

But you're right in that gemming for spellpower is usually something you only do when you no longer have mana issues.

I guess you need to ask the druid if he changes healing assignement. In 10 man there is not much rules with 2 healers. If someone is going to die both land heals (because you can't rely on 4-5 others). If the druids is overgearing it is easier for him to make efficient heal on MT and help on raid.

One thing you could do is checking Healing Taken on Recount (instead of healing done). On mouseovering the names you find the top3 healers for the toon. Normally you should see something like

1st tank -healed by #1 druid #2 priest #3 retpala

2nd offtank -healed by #1 priest #2 druid #3 retpala

3rd randomdps -healed by #1 priest #2 druid #3 retpala

if the druids come always #1, he steals assignement. If you find the priest to high on tank, it means he heals to much on the MT.

Edit: retpaladin assuming he's on JoL, but it can be DK self heal, druid improved pack

Worldie is mostly right other than hps boost on a tank while mt healing or going into malygos vortex, flash heal is usually a superior choice for raid healing (glyphed of course). I don't have the numbers on effieciency but there is a lengthy discussion on this at Elitist Jerks in the healing compendium by constius.

Edit: Also did you have a replenishment in the raid? At the gear levels he is at this could cause a big difference in mana issues. Although with that amount of overhealing he is obviously not doing something quite right due to inexperience or playstyle.
