I need the opinions of fellow pally tanks.. FTW

Cool hello my fellow tankadins. The past few weeks have been a little tough, I was still learning about tanking, and getting good at it. I have been prot since lvl 60, but as of recent i didnt know about the whole defense thing. So.. i sat down and figured out what i needed to do. as of now my guild is in the process of running kara, we have attuman down to 0 wipes, but moroes is a diffent issue. we have downed him 1 out of 10 times. so we stepd back and took a diffrent approach. we are currently in the process of getting EVERYONE attuned for heroics. i am finaly keyd for all of them. now here is my question. take a look at me on the armory http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Eitrigg&n=Gnarkiller
and let me know how well i am geard, and what i should be going after. my defense was at only 428 for the longest time, i finally got it way up.. so please tell me what you think.

Right off the top:

1. Respec. Drop everything out of Holy; right now you're using 5 points in Divine Strength, which may be giving you has much as 25 points of Strength. Given that Attack Power is useless to us, and your strength of 246 is only giving you an extra 12 block value, it's wasted points. 2/5 in Imp SoR is nice, but not really necessary. You should be just fine without it.

What you've got spec'd now in Prot I'm not going to mention, because it falls squarely under personal choices and it's not worth the debate. What I will do is comment on what you don't have. There's two things that you don't have that you really really need - Deflection in Ret tree, and Ardent Defender in Prot.

Deflection is 5% Parry. That's where your 5 points in Divine Strength should go. It's a far better expenditure of points for tanking. Ardent Defender, I cannot tell you how many times I thought I was dead and AD's existence has given my healers enough time to land the heal on me. It's absolutely priceless, even if I think the talent could be improved. I leave it to you to figure out where those points come from; you have 2 free after pulling stuff in Holy. Imp HoJ or Precision are both logical spots to pull from, or you could do something funky with one of your other talents.

Your gear looks fine, but your avoidance numbers are a touch lacking given the 524 Defense you have. I'd start running (regular) Shattered Halls runs. If you AoE tank the entire thing, they're fun as hell, fast runs (40-60 minutes), and the final boss drops Figurine of the Colossus, which is a phenomenal trinket that heals you when you block an attack. I'd use it to replace Dabiri's Enigma (in fact, that's exactly what I did). Jade Skull Breastplate is another excellent item, as mentioned already.

Don't forget with all the Heroics you're going to be doing, you want to save up for the Libram for the extra block chance. That'll help you tremendously as well.

aright i have done some work, got my jade skulll breastplate, replaced the ring, and things are going well. my guild plans on starting karazahan this week. I have been tanking rep runs ALL week, and have been getting a lot of experience, leme know what yall think now.. by the way I KNOW i need new bracers LOL. the ones that drop off of the last boss in heroic mana tombs are what i have been going for. no such luck yet.

You are very much crushable in that gear, so here's some of my advice for gear. I don't know if these changes will get the uncrushable since I'm not a numbercruncher but they will help.

I second the Bracers of the Green Fortress, but if you can't get those then the Sha'tari Wrought Greaves (http://www.thottbot.com/i28167) are from a quest chain and are pretty good too.

For your neckpiece, buy the Strength of the Untamed from Cenarion Expedition: http://www.thottbot.com/i29173 , it will up your dodge considerably, although you'll take a hit in stam.

Your cloak isn't very helpful towards your defenses, I would recommend either the cloak from the first boss of Steamvault - Devilshark Cape (http://www.thottbot.com/i27804) or from Black Morass - Burnoose of Shifting Ages (http://www.thottbot.com/i27988)...although the Devilshark Cape is seemingly a rare drop.

Your sword could be replaced by the Continuum Blade for 15 more stamina from the Keepers of Time.

Your current spell crit ring is worthless for you though, I'd say replace it with that Ring of the Silver Hand from before because of the defense on it.

You could also change the Helm and Gloves of the Righteous with Felsteel crafted items, they have more to offer in defense and stamina with gems if I remember correctly.

You could also look into replacing your +8 defense gems with +4 Defense/+6 stamina to make sure you stay above 490, or go with agility or dodge gems if your defense is above 490 still. There are also enchants to get, such as +150 health to chest, +12 stamina to boots, and either dodge or +12 agility to whatever cloak you go into Kara with.

How'd you manage to get the second Karazhan ring already? lol

That's correct, from the last boss of SV not the first. I suggested the Silver Hand ring since I'm assuming he still has it, there is a good ring from doing the Crimson Watch or whatever quest in Shadowmoon Valley that drops off of the elite patrol that wanders there. Used to be a incredibly difficult 5 man quest that was pretty fun but they tuned it way down.

His current ring is +28 stamina, +9 spell damage (red socket with +7 and bonus of +2) and spell crit increase.

A few suggestions, sadly none cheap:

Get the 18sta/stun resist gem for helm, pair it with a 12sta gem
Go buy strength of the untamed, you have the cenarion rep to get it.
Regem shoulders with solid star of elune & enduring talasite or a second star of elune.
Work on devilshark cape. Hear it's rare but got it first kill m'self, along with the bp of righteousness Smile
Enchant BP with 150hp
Buy bracers of the green fortress and 12sta enchant
Knothide armor kit or spell damage for gloves
Regem legs with 3X solid stars
12 stamina enchant for boots.
Andormu's tear to replace the circlet of the victor if you still have that quest reward. If not, elementium band of the sentry (get the sentry ring anyway as it's better once you're uncrushable without Tear)

Those changes would likely get you uncrushable and with a solid amount of HP. Might also consider continuum blade or crystalforged sword for more hp...though the Greatsword looks so much cooler than either of them Wink
