Diagnosing Threat problems?

My experiences always show Paladins doing significantly less threat than that of Warriors and Druids both short and long term on an individual target.

What are some common mistakes that a Paladin tank could be making in the single target threat department that would lead to my above statement being true? (like is there some way they are being lazy with the 10 second rotation or something?)

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the time I've seen pallys not generating enough threat, 95% of the time it's because they just plain suck at playing pally tanks. Either:

1. they try to gear and tank like a warrior, using a high physical dps tanking weapon, and no spelldamage gear

2. they don't use their abilities. Don't use consecrate, use avenger's shield, etc.

Properly played, a pally should have zero trouble holding threat on decent geared DPS. Paladins actually generate MORE threat than an equally geared warrior on the T4 and T5 levels. It isn't until T6 where warrior threat catches up. Not properly played, they tend to suck.

In other words, PEBKAC issue.

A lof of "newbie" tanks forget about Righteous Fury, yes this is the case for a lot of holy palas, respecing and thinking that tanking can't be that hard.

Heck, I tend to forget (or at least when I was playing the game) to activate Righetous fury on a lot of occasions. The Pala tank mod (Tankadin) helps Smile

Not being MT. We suck at playing #2 threat. We get a crapload of threat from HS, retribution and sanctuary. Removing that means we drop below most bears and wars.

Apart from that, most of the common ones have already been said. Would need the specific armories to give any better advice.

I'll add 2 more (these apply very much in my experience, but for SoV that may be a spell dmg gearing difference)

AW (I generally fire this off 10-15s into fights I know are threat races)
SoV (at my level, ~10-20% more threat)

And possibly if the tank's going OOM, they're not downranking properly... which will surely hurt their tps long term and may cause them to use cons less often.

Crusader is a debuff no the boss, under a yellow icon with blue borders, and it's called Judgment of the Crusader, I think.
It does account for a LOT. It's easy 70 tps for the tankadin.

Things to notice
1: Spell damage
2: for single target, expertise
3: Mobility of the fight. The less you move the more threat you put out
4: DPS(a dpser on par with the tankadin's gear(or any tank at that matter) WILL pull aggro if he or she intends to. It will simply happen)

What is the problem? DPS stealing from the tankadin? tankadin with too low numbers on omen?

Prot pallies are awesome on bloodboil. About as good as druids, both way above warriors.
With a normal tanking gear setup a paladin can build big amounts of threat compared to the warrior(putting the pally in the spriest group is OP, but unnecessary).
If the paladin is too behind and the debuffs are good, Avenging Wrath grants the pally tanking uptime, or even catching back up, also you can bubble out of your debuffs to keep tanking him for as long as possible, or BoP to lose aggro if you have too many debuffs and bubble is on cd(or BoP a tank with too many stacks).

Typically my guild tanks bb with me, druid and a warrior..the warrior has aggro for maybe 10 seconds then the rest of the fight varies between me and the druid.

I've gone through pally tank training on recruits twice.

The biggest problems I've encountered are:

#1 A lack of spelldamage combined with a lack of willingness on the part of DPS to slow down on an undergeared tank.

Generally speaking values:
Kara tank? 200-300 spelldmg
TK / SSC? 300-400
MH / BT? 400+ spelldmg (I run with 500-600)

Note: This could also be a "not using consumables" problem. Spelldmg elixirs, weapon oils (*and occasionally flasks) will notiably lower tps.

#2 Pally tank has never learned a good threat rotation...has been "winging" it and never really thought about order.

Here's a copy of my guild forum post going over it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Opening threat:
BEFORE you pull- Queue up Seal of Righteousness and holy shield

IF "Wings" are up and you won't need them in the next 3mins...go on and use them.

Pull via Avenger's Shield -
(*If something is going on and its not safe to pull via shield, use either exorcism or run in and judgement of righteousness)

"if" its undead/demon Exorcism then Judgement of righteousness

if its not...judgement of righteousness.

Begin your standard rotation going in this priority:
Note: this is a priority list, you always do a higher number before a lower number IF the cooldown is up.

#1 Holy shield (*which should still be up since you cast it before the pull)
#2 Consecration (*here's where you start)
#3 Judge your seal (*if up)
#4 Re-seal you weapon
#5 Exorcism / Hammer of Wraith

Notes:
Only ever recast Avenger's Shield if you have a crapload of mana or there is some reason they can't attack you.

Insert your assigned judgement debuff (*Crusader, Wisdom, Light) on the 2nd or 3rd round through that priority list. You want early threat more than putting it up immediately...but you don't want to hold off too long. Of course if you arent tanking go on and put it up immediately.

Main problem will be new paladins thinking a spell damage wepon is all they need to produce really good TPS. They need to start getting spell damage on their gear (badges, tier gear etc... not enchants apart from wepon)

Rogue guide would be

Kara = 250 spell damage, should be easy with Season 2 wepon and enchant

Im currently at Early tier 5 level 3/4 TK and yet to start SSC and im sitting at around 370 spell damage unbuffed and ive seen 2k TPS with wings up.

Once you get the Al'ar trinket you see pretty sick TPS, with trinket active im pushing 900 effective spell damage
