Re: Am I a masochist, or have things gone too far?

when I read the title of the post made me through about what someone said when I explained to them what I was doing 3 nights a week.

"So you're the only one getting beat up, and you like it? dude, you have a masochist problem"

Re: Am I a masochist, or have things gone too far?

Im no roleplayer, but part of why I like wow is the "feel".

If you dont know what I mean,

"Feel" is the pvp warrior slowed to a halt by magic, howling in defiance, while second wind prepares him for when he finally gets to crush his foe.

"Feel" is the warlock or shadowpriest grinding mobs by dotting them up and ignoring them because they are dead-men-walking

"Feel" is the rogue feeling a mix of fear an embarrassment when he gets pulled out of stealth before he could do whatever dirty deed he had planned..

The "feel" of a tank is the iron-clad (or fur clad =P) juggernaut thriving when the sturdiness of his armor (fuzzy-butt) is put to the test. A tank dealing serious dmg while ignored just doesnt make sense. Its convenient because it makes offtanking easy, and it gives tanks something to do if they arent needed. With duelspec though, tanks should be able to just dps or heal in their duelspecs.

The problem really is, death knights. I mean this semi-jokingly because blaming dks for seemingly unrelated misfortunes is the FOTM =P. But its true, Dks are the first tank to get barely any benifit from taking dmg (theres that one talent in blood that makes runic power kinda like rage.....other than that nothing helps them besides our blessing of sanct). They offset the "feel" of a tank imo.

I didn't see any other Tankadins at all for 90% of BC, there was a sudden influx in the last few months. I just assumed that all the bad Tankadins got frustrated with the class and rerolled and all the semi decent or good ones got snapped up to be a guilds MH bitch.

I think there were perhaps 5 good ones on my server during eraly to mid TBC and 5 to 10 decent ones. Wit the amount of abuse that flew around on my server you had to be good, being good at taking insults and dedicated to stick to your class. It changed later when people saw paladins being good in MH and good in heroics, but most new ones running around were clueless holydins picking up offspec stuff or twinks from people who wanted an easy hero tank.

I think quality has dropped in Wrath but seems to me that´s a genral problem. Easy mode is too easy and people aren´t prepared for hard mode.

I like where Paladins are now, but I don't enjoy the content that I have seen so far as much as I did the content in TBC. Are you saying you do enjoy WotLK content Ulushnar?

I think not having done a lot fo raiding or l60 dungeoning in Vanilla will lead to a very different opinion, yes. I wasn't a paladin then, but my cat and I raided quite a bit in vanilla. UBRS is a fantastic comparison to Karazhan: very trash-ful. Similarly, Stratholme took /forever/. The TBC 5-mans were, as Ulu said, as breath of fresh air by comparison: One path, few trash (relatively), easy exit. It rarely took more than an hour. By comparison, running UBRS (for most people at the time) was basically an entire evening, or the bulk of it.

I like the Wrath instances, too. I adore the architecture and cavern-feeling of the spider instances, love going back to roffle-stomp Stratholme (partly out of revenge ;)), etc. They don't have as much in-instance lore, usually, as the Vanilla ones sometimes seemed to ... but on the other hand, they're fast, and well connected to zone lore. I'm OK with that tradeoff.

In TBC ... I liked some of them a smidge more than the current ones, but some I liked less. Lore-wise, I like them about the same, so it comes down to the Fun Factor ... and I admit, not having to CC things is more fun for me.. perhaps because in Vanilla, if you didn't have a mage and a rogue for every other trash pull, and a hunter to kite or trap or both, your raid was an exercise in frustration. It was fun, as a hunter, to need to do that, but sometimes it was tedious... and sometimes you just want to pew-pew like everyone else. I like having CC saved for emrgencies, rather than a regular "let's sheep this ..." every pull.

I rolled a paladin mid-TBC, so I don't really have an Underdog shine to the class - I started liking to AOE stuff, and grew into loving that I get to Win the TPS meters. ;) (And, all the other fun tanking stuff.)

agree with that

i dunno who told the Devs that getting out of mana is fun? (thinkin in the previous nerfs on the mana regen)
But in the other hand i Love the paladin today.

i mean dont get me wrong, i was a proud paladin tank @ bc, i was from the avoidance school (32% dodge).
but think of this:

how many buttons do you press now and then?
then: seal of right, judge, holy shield, concec, seal of right judge, holy shield (till de 1 min cd,) avengers
the new system of judges is lovely, one less button that u dont need to press anymore
now: holy shield, judge, shoR, concec, hoR, avengers, exo (woops, forgot i lost that button in 3.2)
add divine plea and urselv casting sacred shield, and all the ETC we all know,

u dont have to worry about spell power anymore since your threat is a mix of ur ap/dps/sp and the sp comes from ur stamina (pre future nerf)

I love the pally prot today

Re: Am I a masochist, or have things gone too far?

I started as a pally back a long time ago. I wanted to be a defender protect my friends via wreaking havoc on enemies or just tanking(was misinformed as to the true nature of raiding pallies at the time Human originally, Dwarf upon my return. I healed...by that I mean buff/cleased in vanilla most the time. However I was stubborn and tanked/dpsed back then too...GM claymore gets the job done kinda person. Then BC came and I was one of the fastest people to level in my guild so most the time I was the only person to tank thingswhen the fast levelers were going for instances. around 68 I actually went full time prot.

At 70 I endured alot of ridicule on my server I was about the only pally tank for a when people started running kara(this was a grand 3 weeks after the xpac had been released) I managed to get into a run tanking in kara and the guild never looked back twice at giving me a weekly raid slot being the fastest of the 3 Kara groups we had running. Old man ramblings aside I quit around sunwell release.

A couple of my real life friends convinced me to return. But I had sold my pally to prevent this... so I decided I wanted stone form and frost resistance in tune with the xpac. they had moved to a new guild convinced the GM to invite me claiming I was a living legend of the game...(yeah the way they talked I soloed Illidan) He was laughing about I don't usually invite people who created their characters only a couple hours ago...he also laughed at my level being 12 already. 2hours later I got the achievement for level 20.

The next day it was 30 couple of jokes about me being Chinese. Next day level 40 day after 50 and right into 60 the next day... The new guild's GM was making jokes about he would put in the books for the 10 man naxx as a tank 2 weeks from then ...I said a give me a week and a half. My friends even though this was a bold claim to make considering I work 9 hours a day. I walked into naxx ready to go on the raid scheduled the day I said I would hit 80. I was disappointed.. not so much at the content then but at the other pally tank...I was told he was considered good...like really good. Needless to say I spent the next couple weeks redefining the meaning of good pally tanking to this guild. I by no means consider myself the best but I wasn't about to let some guy who couldn't even master his gearing let alone his rotation claim such a title as best pally tank on the server like he did.

So yeah back to the point I like how far ret and prot have come. holy I feel has regressed with this expac. TBC allowed Prot to shine but not so much ret. Doesn't both me I get to play the pally I wanted to play from the start, the kind who no matter which spec I play the horde on my server know they are in for hell if I am on to protect my friends. (also duel spec is win)
