Where are you from? Where have you been?

Re: Where are you from? Where have you been?

Texas is not actually part of the US, or wouldn't be, if they had their way. It's all part of our global hegemony plan, Texas just begrudgingly goes along with it.

I've actually considered moving to Texas, for various job opportunities.....but....just.....no...

Well we were an independent nation for a while then decided to join up with the USA.

Also, how can you say no to a state as awesome as Texas?

Texas belonged to Spain for a long time before it did to the US, so lots of Mexican people settled there before the transfer of countries. Because of that Texas has a big Latin influence, and man Mexican legal and illegal immigrants go there a lot too now, so Spanish is prevalent

Re: Where are you from? Where have you been?

Sometimes I think people don't realize how large the United States is.

Texas is 60% the size of Iraq.....which is, in and of itself, a large country.

Each state is governed by its own laws, with its own culture, etc. It's very similar to travelling between countries in Europe, except that our mass transit system is laughable in comparison, and we do have federal laws that are uniform.

The basic idea, originally, was for states to be autonomous, and the Federal government to exist only for a very limited number of functions.

That proved not to work so well, but even in our current incarnation, states are still pretty autonomous.

That's why I hate Kansas, and everything to do with it. The other 10 schools of the Big 12 aren't so bad.

If you went for the SEC you wouldn't have this problem,

Re: Where are you from? Where have you been?

One other thing to keep in mind is distance between towns. While in England/France the thing that struck me was the distance between towns is so much smaller. In Oklahoma it's entirely possible to drive 50 miles and NOT hit a new town, and we're only 20th in total land area. Parts of Wyoming/Montana/West Texas (HAH!) are even worse. I look at this as the reason our mass transit (read:train) system is so underdeveloped. There aren't enough stops along the route to be worthwhile.

And again, since space isn't a constraint in the southwest we tend to build outwards instead of upwards. Oklahoma City has a population of only 547,274 but our land area is 621.2 sq mi (1,608.8 km2) in size. That yields a population density of 871.5/sq mi (336.5/km2). By contrast London has a population of 7,556,900 and a total land area of 1,706.8 km2 (BARELY larger than OKC) yielding a density of 4,761/km2 (12,331/sq mi). You can contrast the metropolitan areas rather than just the city areas and come up with numbers that are very skewed, the OKC metripolitan area is VERY large in comparison to its population (at 6,359 sq. mi. it's larger than the state of Connecticut).

Areas of the North-East US have a more densely packed population and a much more developed mass transit system...The midwest/southwest, not so much. We're just to spread out to make such a system cost effective.

And , for lawls, I looked at the Wikipedia article for Alaska...It's larger than all but 18 sovereign countries. I totally didn't realize that.

Re: Where are you from? Where have you been?

Boo! Hiss!!!

The SEC is the most overrated football conference there is, despite Florida. (Sure, they play other sports, but don't get nearly the fan-fare).

If Texas had not been robbed last year..........

This year will hopefully be quite different.

As much of an MU fan as I am, I think Texas is going to win the Big 12, and play for the National Championship.

Re: Where are you from? Where have you been?

They're not overrated, they have been proven to have the most sturdy and challenging schedule of any conference. Every team minus 1 or 2 is in the top 20 if not 15 every year. No other conference can say that.

Re: Where are you from? Where have you been?

Why is it that people always list the American states they've been to? There's 50 freaking states, no need to list them all. The US, is the US, that's one country. Listing the states... we might as well list all the cities we've been to as well.

A handful of our states are infact as big as your countries. I have been to a ton of cities in europe as well. I could list all the cities I have been to and probably get banned from the forums for an excessive post.
