Of Signatures and BBCODE

Howdy Folks

Though I would attempt to help clear some of the clutter on how to use the site features and signatures.

This post is in three sections. Creating Descriptive Signatures, Implementing Signatures and Tricks and Tools.

NOTETo test your signature, please use the spam-catcher forum "General Chat" http://www.failsafedesign.com/maintankadin/viewforum.php?f=7

NOTE 2Many signature sites and other armory related tools are down at the moment due the the new DDOS attack measures in place. No real advice on how to get around this - just good luck!

CREATING DESCRIPTIVE SIGNATURES
Generally on Maintankadin we want our signatures to do two things. First, provide an at-a-glance reference of our characters. Secondly, provide something to click on to take people to your Armory profile. Some people prefer to do their own thing - that's fine. This is for those with little inclination to create their own l33t signature and those that want the dynamic stats element.

So, first the Signature Sites.
The following sites all create a dynamic signature. Every so often, the data is refreshed so a reasonably current version with current stats is shown. Great!

Signature Generator Sites
http://www.dkpsigs.com
Requires log in, you can create more than one signature per account. You can go back and edit if you wish. Allows custom Avatar however you will need to host your custom Avatar on a website somewhere and provide the path to it. Provides native BBCODE for you to cut and paste in to your profile (see below).

Example

Example BBCODE:

Implementing Signatures

1/Click on Profile up on the top menu once you have logged in.
2/Scroll down to the Signature section
3/Paste your BBCODE from above.

But wait! Doing that only provides the pretty little picture. What about a link to my Armory profile?

The next bit is a bit trickier. Basically, you kinda encapsulate the image in the link to Armory.

Tricks and Tools

This section is aimed at making the most of your Signature space.

Tiny URL
Some members would like to have to Descriptive Signatures with links to Armory for both characters. The problem is that there is a limit to how many characters can be put in the Signature space. So, we have to work around that.

Go to your Armory link and copy the URL.

edit: hey, you made it into a nice, informative post! sticky imo!

This space STILL for rent, PST in game with offer!

"If you have a ' (comma) in your server name, substitute it for %27."
If you have an ' (apostrophe) in your server name, substitute it with %27.

I like... Reminded me about tinyurl, I'd forgotten about that.

Also, just in case there's a SPACE in the URL (which I highly doubt, but here it is nonetheless), substitute it for %20.

eg:

Thanks Guillex

The good thing about Tiny is that it does not have spaces.

Stickied since we get lots of questions about this sort of thing (this post will probably save my PM inbox quite a bit of hassle), starting to get quite a few stickies in the general forum though. I might look at making one "FAQ/Helpful Threads" sticky and just putting stuff like this in there.

My MUDs forums have a ton of stickies, and it gets old pretty fast. I'd definitely suggest either a single index thread or a seperate (locked) FAQ forum.

Just as a note.

Servers like C'thun have an apostrophe, which is represented by %27

So, C'thun becomes C%27thun
