Block Value .. numbers off?
Hey all.. quick question..
Myself and a warrior were testing out block values.. on the first mobs in heroic sethekk.. lvl 70 elites..
I tried it with 498 BV and my combat log showed blocked value of 538
when i popped autoblocker my BV was 758 .. but combat log showed 798 blocked each hit..
so a flat difference of 40 each time.. can anyone tell me why this difference occurs or if anyone else faces the same problem?.. the warr also said he was blocking for more than what he was supposed to..
my BV was calculated as (item BV total + str BV total)*1.3

As far as maths goes, I suck so I'm not gonna bother looking at the numbers. But I would guess that the gain from using your Auto-blocker is affected by the Shield Specialization talent.

Make some tests with no items equip at all, using a Dented Buckler.
( I do not have any acess to WoW at the moment, else I would have tried that

That's not quite the formula for BV. According to WoWWiki, it's:
- Code: Select all
(Item BV total * 1.3) + ((Strength / 20) - 1)
Maybe that will yield the same number as your combat log?

I don't think so. I started a newbie Shammy recently, and he had a shield equipped. When he blocked, it was for 1 damage, which is the amount of block value on the shield itself.

Which means that he over evaluated his block value. His number is actually higher. Using the wiki formula will yield an even lower number...
By "str BV total" do you mean the "Increases block" on the strength tooltip ?
What are you getting if you use the wikipedia formula ?

Just use TankPoints xD or read the number in your combat log...that is your block value, no matter what your calculations tell you

Yeah your talent only multiplies your block value from "Increases your shield's block value" and your Shield's actual Block Value. Block value gained from Strength doesn't get multiplied.
Why it's higher than you expected I don't know... maybe you missed some socket bonuses or something?

That makes me a sad panda. :\
Yeah, it sucks for warriors more though.

It was probably put this way because of warriors. Strength workin for AP (damage/white threat), BV (mitigation, and Shield Slam (dmg + yellow threat), whereas for us all it does, primarily, is increase BV. The AP is almost laughable, which is why I can't wait to ditch all the +strength on my current gear.

So thats what block value does haha I always just thought it was useless. Well in a way I guess it kind of is other than to be uncrushable I just always prefer more dodge. So from what I'm understanding block value is how much damage you reduce when you block? Like if a mob hits you for 2k normally and you have say 700 block value and you block it will hit you for 1300? Also does block rating/value or whatever it is also add to your percent chance to block? If so I'll definitly be getting auto blocker 600 until I get my moroes lucky pocket watch.
God I love this sight you learn so much. I mean the only thing that makes me a good tank right now is my gear. I just do tons of heroics and rock at doing them so I'm overgeared for stuff like Kara but I swear I dont know jack about tanking.
