Origin of NIGGARD
Middle English, of Scandinavian origin; akin to Old Norse hnøggr niggardly; akin to Old English hnēaw niggardly

"Niggard" although phonetically similar to "nigger" has absolutely nothing related to the word.

"Nigger" was a mispronunciation of the Spanish "negro" by Dutch slave traders.

Amusing detail: "negro" and its French cousin "nègre" were pretty much the equivalent of the current english "nigger". Only reason they aren't used much anymore is they fell completely out of favor. It's actually pretty common to use the term "black" in French to dismissivly talk about people of Sub-Sahara African descent.

Just an fyi, that etymology isn't accurate. It stems from latin for the word black via some descendant languages, nothing to do with social disadvantage.

Edit: you're probably thinking of the word niggard, which has a completely different etymology and is entirely distinct from the n word.

My apologies, I had the origin wrong, but that is the current definition (#3) according to Merriam-Webster.

Happy Birthday Lev.

In less happy news. At the doctors yesterday for a bunch of things and I asked about depression. Doctor seems pretty confident that I have it but I go back in two weeks to see if these sleeping pills have done the job first (I don't think they will). Think I will refrain from making relationship choices until after this is resolved.

Wise choice, but don't shut yourself up from romantic interaction. My wife got a short but rather frightening depression in the mid-00's and human contact really was a lifesaver every step of the way.

Grats on Ding Levie.

Orthien: yeah, be careful with putting off choices; depression easily feeds on itself, and apart from the underlying brain chemistry, "just doing stuff" really helps "correct" the chemistry (positive feedback loop ftw - you feel better, you do more, so you feel even better (repeat ad nauseam))

Hey, Nooska, can you link your sources that "doing stuff" helps depression because of a feedback loop? Most of the time, I just feel annoyed beyond all fuck, so I'd like a look at the studies conducted.

Yea definitely not going to lock myself away or anything, will keep doing things with friends and wont run should I meet someone. But definitely wont be planning any trips to Aussie etc until its sorted.
Saying that, the lack of motivation to do anything at all isn't working to well with the "just do stuff". Its taking a lot of menal willpower that I ussually don't have just to make sure I am not skipping on my powerlifting. Everything else is out of luck though.

Feeling of accomplishment = endorphin release. Endorphine release = feel better. Feel better = accomplish more stuff.

All I can find (quickly) are powerpoints etc in danish (its in danish I've seen it previously) from medical professionals (doctors, nursemasters and the like) that are presentations, as well as general advice from the patient unions on depression and psychiatric illnesses in general.

Apart from the links fivelives provides, adn the "feeling of accomplishment", its also the pretty basic "if I'm doing something I like, I feel better than if I'm not" (seperate from accomplishment, but still positive association).

I'll see if I can finde more on it, if I can remember where I read it (its one of those things that I've read at some point, which was relevant because I've suffered from depression myself, and my GF has also suffered from depression - currently being phased out of antidepressants)

Not exactly. It's more like "if I'm doing something, I'm concentrating on that and not on the things that bother me."

If it's something you like doing, then it provides an endorphin rush of its own.

Well, first surgery went ok. Only pain was 2 days spent "recovering" with my mother watching big brother and duck dynasty.
Battery was implanted yesterday, and all I want are muscle relaxers. Not in much, pain, but major discomfort from soreness and muscle spasms.

On a side, why the hell are hospital schedules so loose? report time was 3 hours before the surgery. Both times. Was fucking bring.

Because sometimes in surgery, shit happens.

When I had mine a couple years ago, I was told to show up at 930a for an 11a start time. I didn't start until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, despite being the 2nd patient of the day for the surgeon, because the 1st patient had Other Issues Arise that required his attention.

Well just got back from the doctors and he said I do indeed have depression.

A least now its being treated and hopefully in a month or so I should be able to properly get my head around what I actually feel and how I should act on that. Better still I should hopefully feel happy and motivated again. Its been a while.
