Next expansion?

Postby Newsom » Tue Aug 13, 2013 8:40 am

I think it's time to start speculating! We had a similar thread for MoP back when they registered some domain name and the discussion proved fairly interesting.

From MMO-C:

Could this be the next expansion? Or is it just Diablo 3?

Quoting WoWPedia's tiny stub on it:
The Dark Below is a place inhabited by demons, devils and infernal creatures, from where some sorcerers take their power directly and sometimes have a patron beast to foster their magic.

WoW or D3 expansion? The Dark Below

Postby halabar » Tue Aug 13, 2013 8:42 am

So, it's time to play the trademark game again. Blizz has trademarked The Dark Below, following the pattern of previous game software titles.

So, WoW expac or D3 expac?

If WoW, that sure sounds like we are going to Nagatown. Would be interesting to see a "Mines of Moria" type WoW expac, but we already had Deepholm, can't get deeper than that.

I could see some possile themes going with this:
  • Old god expansion
  • Azshara/Nazjatar/deep sea expansion
  • Demons and stuff coming from underneath Azeroth (maybe the Legion found a new portal somewhere?)

Have you noticed Ozumat's title?

Blizzard has also been avoiding questions about what happened to Neptulon in Throne of the Tides for some time. I recently re-watched the 2011 Blizzcon Lore panel and they straight out said they just didn't want to answer a question about it. Hmm?

Nagaland it is, which will contain yet more Burning Legion lead-ins. (And after Nagaland we'll get the Emerald dream with still more burning Legion lead-in.. thinking that when we finally see the Burning Legion again it will be the last expac).

Well, deepholm wasn't so much deep as in a completely different plane of existance.

Now, since we're into the uncharted lore waters with what they've introduced in MOP... could perhaps be an 'underdark'-inspired expansion? Or at least a literally underground one? Perhaps some ancient force (dark trolls? Or something 'new') make a comeback? Explore the basement of Karazhan?

I don't see too much more underwater stuff, much less an entire expansion based on it, after the rage over Vashj's mechanics.

D3 expansion, possibly as well - I'd imagine it may be of a similar theme (moar underground dungeons!), though I have a bit more of a tough time there since that seems to revolve around the demons and angels mucking about.

Could be both.

A "the deep below" wow expansion could be themed after azjara and naga's empire

But it would also be a D3 expansion and be a reference to the inferno and wherever Lea's mom has gone.

Yeah, but remember the stub (which would make it almost sound like an underdark like thing, with a side of elemental plane) comes from the RPG, which Blizz has been more than happy to ignore.

My gut feeling on this says D3 expansion.

Seems a tiny bit early to me since we have at least one patch left before the current expansion is played out. Have we ever had a WoW expansion trademark come out in the late-middle of the previous expansion before?

Besides Ozmut's title... consider Ra-dens's defeated text

Wait! I am... I am not your enemy. You are powerful, more powerful than he was, even... perhaps you are right. Perhaps there is still hope.
But there is a yawning chasm of darkness beneath you mortals, vast, endless, and all consuming. I do not believe that you can correct this doomed course.
But you have earned the right to try. Farewell.

Sure points to WoW expac...

Yeah, this is why I'm leaning more towards WoW than D3.

So, sofar, we have the title, The Dark Below

For WoW..

Ozumat's title - <Fiend of the Dark Below>
Ra-Den's defeated text, speaking of a yawning chasm of darkness..

For D3..

no idea. where can they go next, and, with the console version coming out so recently, would they really come out with a D3 expansion so soon?

The MoP trademark was taken out at the start of August 2011, with MoP announcement in October 2011, beta launched in March 2012, game release in September 2012. Little over a year between the trademark and the launch. When MoP was trademarked, we were only a couple of months into Firelands.

With Blizzcon coming, assuming they are going to announce, they need to start preparing materials, so the name needs to be registered before any of that work starts.

Huh, well alright then, sounds like the timing works for a WoW expansion.

I have a feeling its a WoW expansion since I can't see how the title relates to the coming events of Diablo that we have heard about.

My thoughts is that there was something trapped within Azeroth, maybe old god related, maybe Burning Legion. Its prison was broken during the Cataclysm since when it has been building strength within the earth.
Definitely will have some BL tie ins for that expansion when we finally get it.
Maybe some more Goblin stuff.
My speculation is we will also see Magni return to the game. Having spent his time one with the earth, he found out about this darkness thats been brewing and stayed so long learning about it so that he could return now to warn and prepare us.

Seems the D3 xpack will be "The Reaper of Souls", so "Dark Below" seems a good bet for WoW...

See the page for reaper of souls and MMO-C's page on that
When that day comes, seek all the light and wonder of this world, and fight.

My money on a Naga/Old God oriented expansion.

...or something about the Burning Legion? Wrathion has been talking about that for the whole expansion.

If im not mistaken, I believe "the Dark below" is another name for N'zoth or whatever his name is.
The old god that possessed Deathwing.
The seacreature (and only reason people assume its an underwater expansion) from throne of tides is called "<Fiend of the Dark Below>" and he was created by N'zoth if i remember correctly.
While the Dark Below can mean dark below the surface, down in water where the sun doesnt reach, its also a way to describe caves in the same way.
Theres also some correlation with N'zoth beeing hidden below the maelstrom (i guess even below deepholm now?).
And since MoP was a bit of a distraction from normal Azeroth business, I would be more than stoked if the next expansion went back to azeroth (smth they have confirmed) and dealt with an old god or two.
If the Dark Below in fact is the name for the expansion referensing N'zoth, then the expansion is pretty much like the N'zoth expansion like Wrath was about lich king.
Leading up to the old god somehow beeing the endboss.
Im pumped about it atleast.

Not disagreeing with you really, but technically MoP is set in Azeroth and was all about an old god. ;)
