So, Florida is at it again.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/09/tech/gami ... ?hpt=hp_t3

Now any device potentially used to gamble on the internet is illegal. This means if you raid in Florida, and you use a bonus roll, you just broke the law. No, really, it does mean just that. It also means that computers are illegal as well, including cellphones.

be interesting to see if it becomes 'OK, well, if you pay <insert value here> in taxes on any earnings gained, you'll be good.' ... which is basically where many states have tried to go with anything computerized that may involve something resembeling a sales transaction.

Gotta remember that Florida is one of those few states that bans most "give away" type contests, like the McDonald's ones, or similar, in an effort to protect their vulnerable citizens that can't cleanly punch a chad.

In normal states, yes...

However, this is Florida, where the McDonald's Monopoly game can be considered gambling.

From the article...

Florida's new, expanded definition of a slot machine includes "any machine or device or system or network of devices" used to play games of chance or skill, which can be activated by not just inserting money, but an "account number, code, or other object or information."

A bonus roll is a game of chance (using an in-game currency) and your computer is a slot machine since it allows you perform that bonus roll. (Especially since Blizz may start selling lesser charms for real currency).

Heck, the bonus roll even has that dice icon with it. That's all that Florida lawmakers need... :-)

Remember, this law outlawed Internet cafes.

Other parts of the article make it clear that a "payout of any value" must be possible for it to count, so I don't think bonus rolls are at risk specifically.

Well, your computer is illegal anyway, since it has the potential to be a slot machine, but isn't epic loot a payout? Especially when lesser charms may be bought for real-world currency soon, the Florida law would have to define a payout as a tangible real-world object, currency, or service, which it probably doesn't.

Considering the IRS is also looking at taxing the sale of virtual goods...

realizing that explaining the concept of 'opposite' to a 3 year old is really hard (examples: easy. General conceptual explanation and simple definition: hard)... and wondering how a dictionary defined it.

Funny enough, Myriam-Webster uses a circular definition with 'diametric'. Don't have access to the OED anymore, so not sure what they do.

Something like "being the other of two complementary or mutually exclusive things".
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/opposite

When I'm faced with a troublesome word that needs defining, I think of synonyms that might be easier to define, and look into the etymology of the word. "other side". "contradiction". "antonym".

If all else fails, resort to a round-about explanation using examples. Bright / dark is a good one.

I enjoyed trying to teach my grand nephew how to use a fork and knife properly.

I gotta see if the Imax across the street from my office is going to get it. Not just is the place not that much more expensive and never full, but I can't think of a better place to watch giant robots punch giant monsters.
