As expected, the marriage bill passed, so New Zealand became the 13th country in the world, and first in the southern hemisphere, to formally recognise gay marriage. After the votes were read, there was a standing ovation and parliament broke out in song. Cool moment, bro.

Technically, their's isn't law yet, as the it's awaiting presidential signature, which is just a formality.

Re: LGBT rights discussion
I watched a fantastic documentary over the weekend.
For the Bible Tells me So
It's a fantastic look into the lives of 5 christian families who have gay children, as well as looking at the fallacies of modern religion that lead to people believing that the bible speaks out against Homosexuality, when in fact, it is inconclusive at best, and even not true, when looking at the scriptures.
It tackles Proof Texting and Biblical Literalism, two things that the fundamentalist christian movement primarily, but even others who cite the scriptures in reference to it's stance on homosexuality, use to prove their point.
I would love to think that my parents would learn something from this documentary, but I doubt that it would happen. They are too far entrenched I fear.

Same-Sex Marriage Does Threaten "Traditional" Marriage
Smart article on the real motives behind supporting "traditional" marriage.

So, we should live in the stone age in order to protect their fragile minds? *facedesk*
I've always wondered when they tell me that traditional marriage is something awesome... if its so awesome, how come 2 out 3 end in divorce?

Life is awesome, but 3 out of 3 end in death.

Well, thing is, you don't have much choice in how life ends, outside of "death".

It comes from the same thing that article points out: "traditional" marriages were not meant to account for an intimate personal relationship, but were about the roles of husband and mother. Society has shifted so that the relationship has gained increasing importance, and it's become acceptable to end the marriage when that relationship's no longer there (it's perfectly natural for people to change and grow apart).
Divorce becoming commonplace was just one step on the redefinition of marriage away from the outdated and misogynistic enforcement of gender roles it was originally built on.
(So yeah, traditional marriage = not so awesome.)

FTA:Then on Saturday, the Alliance Defending Freedom helped Protect Marriage file an emergency motion (read the original filing) to block same-sex marriages from resuming in California.
I dont think that means what you think it means.

It's always the Alliance. When have you last seen the headlines about the Horde oppressing LGBT rights?

Interesting logic. Anti-gay activists don't benefit financially from hating gays, therefore their opponents have to benefit financially. And, q.e.d., they are the equivalent of slaveowners, anti-suffragettes and jim crow-supporters.

Re: LGBT rights discussion
The House of Lords has voted through the UK's gay marriage bill. All it's waiting for now is some debate on amendments and the Queen's signature.
(For some reason this news was buried in the "Politics" section of BBC News, I had to dig for it to confirm what I'd heard.)

Royal assent has been granted. Same-sex marriage will be legal in the UK.
