Re: Game of Thrones
Spoiler'd:
"Main"/good characters dies.
Bad guys win.
Dead babies.
Dead doggies.
Murderous black humour.
Edit: forgot - backstabbing.
All of that, Games of Throne style (a.k.a. no Discretion Shot for you!)

Re: Game of Thrones
People who have not read the books are finally learning how little GRRM is attached to his characters. And it's kind of funny.

Not entirely true. He did say writing the Red Wedding chapter was one of the hardest things he's done. Put it off until the rest of Storm of Swords was done, and declined to write the episode when offered.
But he'll still do it.

Re: Game of Thrones
He's only killed two major PoV characters in five books - the non-PoV characters are of course more significant on TV where you're not locked into the heads of a specific few.
He kills off every one-shot prologue/epilogue character, and he's killed some that only had a short storyline in one book, but mostly they stick around.

I dunno, it just seems so much more pronounced here in GoT when someone dies compared to other books.

It does. Death actually has impact and consequences in these books. Not really a sign that the author doesn't care is it?

Re: Game of Thrones
Maybe it's just me but when I see an author killing off characters in a way that majorly impacts the rest of the story, I see it as a lack of caring.
Sure, I've read books that have characters die (Wheel of Time for example), but the 'major' ones didn't really have any deaths until the end where it was a closing thing.

Re: Game of Thrones
Lack of caring would be if their deaths were meaningless to the plot. If he didn't portray these deaths with all this horror and grief, for example.
And this event only killed one "major" character, from a narrative perspective.
And it was less a case of killing her and more of changing her role in the story.
I wonder if the show will include a scene of Beric finding the body. Would be an interesting thing to throw in as the final image of the season.

Another way to look at it:
If he's going to do THIS to these characters, imagine what's in store for THOSE other characters.
Spoiler alert: I haven't actually read the books.

It almost makes me want to attempt to suffer through the dryness that is book 2...
...almost.
Okay so it's not just me that's dying while reading book 2. I think I'm four hundred pages in and it's finally picking up, but the first 100-200 pages made me want to just put it down altogether. The Red Wedding scene from the show actually spurred me to get into it (and through it) faster so I can at least move on. I've got about twenty books sitting on my "to read" shelf that have been sitting there for about a year due to being stuck on this blasted book.
And also, only one more episode left in Season 3 of GoT?

Yeah, there's really not a whole lot happens in the second book. Noticed that when I reread the series before book 5 came out.

I wouldn't mind that so much is he was actually BETTER at describing it. He tells us what they're eating, but in pretty common terms. Like "here's what's spread out in front of them" but not in terms that are particularly salivating or whatever.
To be honest, I'm not even sure I actually LIKE his writing. The story is well laid out (although sometimes there are discrepancies in how characters are described) and that's what tends to keep me reading. But in general, I don't really feel like these are particularly enthralling reads in terms of wording.

Re: Game of Thrones
How are you guys dying reading book two? Just wait until book 4...
Every character that gets a chapter I don't give a single solitary FUCK about? Check. Excessive chapters from Cercei's cracked out sociopath PoV? Check. A complete LACK of Arya stark chapters? Check. Samwell Tarly being a piece of shit fat fucking craven every other chapter? Check. A random sub plot taking place down in dorn I really don't give two shits about. Check.
really the only redeeming thing about book 4 is that it saves me from having to read all these stupid plot chapters for these characters in book 5, which apparently will be more focused on John Snow, Danerys, Arya and in general characters I actually enjoy reading about.

To each their own of course.
To book 4's credit, I enjoyed Jaime's, Brienne's and Sansa's chapters for the most part.
If I was reading before bed though and the next chapter was another fucking cercei chapter, i'd put the book down and go to bed. She's just such a tiring character to read through.

Aside from him being a vehicle to deliver some plot, I don't recall him having any purpose other than being scared of everything and just being otherwise fat.
Couldn't GRRM have written a different character to achieve the same things as Sam, just in a skinnier, less annoying form?
No offense to fat people, but the writing really points out that Sam is two things and two things only, fat and craven.

Yeah why did GRRM feel the need to point out that Sam is fat in every sentence that describes him? It seems a bit weird.
I had to laugh when he killed the white(waight?)walker with the dagger and then dropped it and ran off. Clever dude, clever.

These are the kinds of things that make me start rooting for characters to die.

Depends. All you have to do is be faster than him. He's big enough to provide enough distraction from the zombies for a while.
