King Felix signs a 7 year extension with the Mariners.
Guess he really doesn't want a ring.

Actually, it's pretty smart.
Sign a LONG TERM deal, with your club. Now, whoever holds the contract, holds the power. Clubs like the Yankees, Sox, Etc... see a GREAT young pitcher at a good bargain price, and controlled years left on the contract?
He just became the most prized pitching commodity in Baseball. I've got money that says he gets traded at the trade deadline in the 2014 season.

Umm... Are you nuts?
First, as Shoju mentioned, this may actually help him get traded to a contender later on.
Second, who can predict who will come out a winner with a ring year to year? Look at the winners the last 5 years, how many of those would he have signed with as a FA?
Third.. $25 mill a year. When you are one snapped ligament away from being a footnote.

Bill Simmons on PEDs. Specifically, about how Player's Associations blocking testing and speculating about PEDs is connected.

Peter King mentioned today that he's heard that the NFL is going to try to get HGH testing approved this offseason if they can get it through the NFLPA. That's so ass backwards it's not even funny. What a joke these player's unions are.Paxen wrote:Specifically, about how Player's Associations blocking testing and speculating about PEDs is connected.

Player's associations do good stuff (veterans salaries and such), but drug testing isn't one of them.

The unions aren't really so concerned about the drug testing, as much as the slippery slope of what else they might decide to look for.
Also, and more importantly, it's a bargaining chip. Add 10% more guaranteed money? Sure, test all you want!

Poor kid.. So you are about to start your college career, but your mamma doesn't like your school choice, so she runs off with your signing papers. Wow. He's gonna be mocked more than Teo if he winds up going to his mama's choice of school.
Things just got weirder.

I think Felix is a likely trade candidate in 3 years or so.. unless the Mariners pull it together. But the Mariners have such a history of trading away stars or letting them walk, they might hold fast this time.

Maybe. But...

This is a shitty reason. Unions should have as much interest in cleaning up the sport as the leagues have. In the end, they're eating out of the samt trough - if the fans turn against the sport because they lose faith the athletes, both owners and player suffer.
Plus, by working against testing, unions are working for the interests of their cheating members, but directly against the interests of their clean members.

Totally agree, but that's the reality of the situation. Unions aren't going to give that up for free, especially since there might be that slippery slope.

And that's what makes them bad unions. Treating something that's in their own long term best interests, as well as the immediate interests of their honest members, as a bargaining chip, something the owners need to "buy".
