I'm excited to see what he can come up with for HBO. I'm also more and more worried that he'll suffer a Jordan.

However, I think that even with all this Winds of Winter may be here before 2016. He spent a lot of the time between 2000 and 2011 rewriting and scrapping large parts of the books (creating a 5 year gap, then going back and filling it in, splitting Feast and Dance, then deciding that that didn't work after all). He may have a better handle on things this time around.

But he's still the author that tried starting a series for 20 years or so, and always got distracted after writing the first novel or story. Reading Dreamsongs didn't really fill me with confidence that he's capable of finishing this...

In the net there are a lot of resentment ever since he called the commenters that didn't like his last books puppets or something...
Well Kysen, it's always different to each person... for some they buy a book and are happy (or not happy if they didn't like it), for others they bought a part of a series and they resent not being able to finish it.

If you buy 3episodes of a serie then you learn that the 6th episode is canceled... you might like the episodes but still feel cheated.

For me, i don't think he owes me anything if he refunds me for the last two books... and plants a tree to make up for that waste of good paper.

P.S. But i wholly agree with you about the "it's no call for insults."

Are you sure?
When you go to a shop and see "Wheel of time - vol.10" you buy it because it's just a book? Or you make sure that you have\read the previous ones?

Are you saying you didn't feel "cheated" if:
Martin comes and says he's not doing any more books for this series?

P.S. I think there are still people pissed with Jordan since he had the audacity to die before finishing his series...

Depends on the series really.

Lincoln rhyme series are pretty episodic, you can pick up number 6 and doesnt matter much...

Pick up dance with dragons as your first book in the series and youll be "whut?"

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend asoiaf to anyone due to the risk of grrm never finishing the series.

I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on such good books just in case they get hung up on needing a conclusion.

Kafka never finished writing The Trial (it seriously has no ending), but it's still a classic.

kafka is kafka... and reading a book with no ending is probably not as bad as reading a series of books with no ending

also, in kafka's case, it's probably kind of meta that it has no ending.

IMO book 1 to 3 are worth it even if the series never ends.

It's not like 4 and 5 are drek on the level of Wheel of time book 7-10.

This is what i think... Wheel of time still had some actions even if they were irrelevant for the series... ASoIaF not so much?

Well, is Neil the most "independent" person to comment on this? Or doesn't he worked together with George on somethings? I remebember some praises of GRRM about his books and vice-versa or something like that?

When you buy a book in the middle of a series it's different from buying a book stand alone.
Honestly, i didn't buy 5 books of ASoIaF, i bought volume I,II,III,IV, V.
Cmon guys this is rubish... If you go and buy a book and the last chapter isn't a "The End", it is acceptable... even if you prefer if it had a finish.
When you buy a book and the last chapter is blank and says "couldn't be bother to finish\i found other thing i prefer to write about" it's totally diferent thing.

Do i agree that when a series is started there are some "moral obligations" to finish? YES
Do i agree that when a series is started a writer is "forced" to finish and in the time "I" want? NO
Reading a series can be compared to sexual intercourse, reading it is not garantee the writer will take you to the end/orgasm.. but if he doesn't give it to you it's not the same.
