Predominantly "mobile" here in New Zealand. Occasionally you will hear "cell" but as an abbreviation - on one really says "cell phone".

We get both American and UK TV here in roughly equal parts, so we are influenced by both cultures.

In Australia its most definitely 'mobile'
Using 'Cell' denotes you as American and thus vulnerable to 'drop bears'.

This. So much this. Drop bears do love them some 'murricans.

I did hear someone ask if anyone had seen her cell yesterday at uni. The lecturer actually didn't know wtf she was talking about for a couple of seconds. Damn American exchange students.

To be fair, if they have a criminal history and don't meet entrance requirements for US universities, where else but Australia can they go?

;)

You're probably giving it too much thought. That said, even in the US where we say "Cell" on stationary and address books its quite often referred to as mobile. I'd say mobile is your best bet.

I always used to call it a Cell, till moving to the UK (from south Africa) and now I mix mobile in occasionally. The English do use "Mobile" somewhat exclusively but I've never had a confused expression for calling it a Cell. Unlike some of the other language foibles like "traffic circle" v "roundabout".

Amusingly, we say GSM in Belgium. I'd bet hard-pressed to understand why, considering there are (according to wikipedia) THREE countries that use that acronym (stands for Global System for Mobile Communications) - Belgium, New Caledonia, and Reunion Island.

Though, "mobile celullar communications technology" could be interesting.

Well, technically the most appropriate term would be cellular phone, as mobile is a generic term and could be attached to any mobile device such as satellite phones, whereas cell phone specifically refers to the use of the cellular grid used by the operators to provide signal.

Sounds like for once the Yankees might be doing the right thing :P

Regardless of how the network is set up, there's nothing cellular about my phone.

Cell Phone redirects to Mobile Phone on Wikipedia, So I assume Mobile Phone is more dominant worldwide.

My phone answers to all manner of names but I have never called it a cell or cell phone.

90% of the time its called a mobile by me, the other 10% its called 'fecking thing won't shut up' or something similar.
