Mik's scrolling battle text
Why do you use it? I know there are people who configure it cleverly to work like a semi power aura, but for most players it's just the biggest spam bot possible in the middle of your screen. This isn't meant as an insult or anything. I just want understand why anyone would want that wall of text in their face.

Well you have to configure out the wall of text. I think you basically answered your own question with the comment about configuration.
When I used it, I created about 5 different areas that were filtered for specific types of messages so I'd have the information I wanted readily available when it mattered.

I keep standard outgoing damage text on, but I use MSBT so I can spot specific things as they go in/out. I also set up custom alerts which are handy.

Re: Mik's scrolling battle text
hey,
so ... a badly configured addon is not good? No News to me...
I use MSBT with the standard 3 Areas:
- Incoming has incoming damage (without full avoid) and self heal
- Outgoing has all outgoing healing / damaging abilities
- Notification Area has all important Buff / Debuff Notifiers (Divine Purpose as Ret, ...)
Its clean and I can see exactly for how much this boss hit me in the last 10 sec, whats not to like ?
Bye, RedAces.

i use it mostly for the notifications
have them pop up just over my character on my screen

Brekkie:Tanks are like shitty DPS. And healers are like REALLY distracted DPS
Amirya:Why yes, your penis is longer than his because you hit 30k dps in the first 10 seconds. But guess what? That raid boss has a dick bigger than your ego.
Flex:I don't make mistakes. I execute carefully planned strategic group wipes.

I use just the Inc Damage frame and it scrolls right out of my unit frame, all it shows is the damage, Dodge/Parry/Miss, and how much was blocked.
To me its useful and informative and doesn't clutter my screen at all.

I keep damage in, my mitigation, and healing in on the left; and damage out and healing out on the right. Everything else is turned off. It has useful stuff with the default settings, but I found it takes up too much space. The mana intake might be useful for a healer. I'd suggest that you find what you like and 86 the rest.
Here's an old shot, but I still have MSBT the same way.

Re: Mik's scrolling battle text
If it's spammy, it hasn't been set up properly. Concessions to be made for the the fact that it's quite spammy out of the box, but no add-on should be judged on its out of the box configuration (although there is a strong argument to be made for having a sane default config to not put off new users).

I have damage output on the right and damage taken (including dodges, parries etc.) on the left. Notifications are in the default notification area, although I don't use them for anything while I'm Protection. They're not right on top of my character because they're not vital information, but having a convenient place to see incoming damage is quite useful. I used to have incoming healing shown, but turned it off on the basis that there's not an awful lot I can do with that information; if I've out-ranged the healers then I'm going to notice that on Grid before I notice a lack of green messages.

Bumping to see if anyone knows how to configure the incoming area to show self heals only. Not heals from other players. Hoping its just an option I'm overlooking.

Perhaps under events, set outgoing player - heals to display in the incoming scroll area, and turn off incoming heals?

I've tried that. Any heals you cast are outgoing heals even if cast on yourself, and turning on incoming heals shows heals from all players. It might not be doable, was just hopeful.

Re: Mik's scrolling battle text
Interesting; I set up a notification for outgoing heals and it would only show heals I cast on other people. Heals I cast on myself (or procced) did not. I'd actually find this kind of thing useful. I'll dig around the LUA and see if the logic is reasonably easy to change.
Edit: okay it's actually pretty straightforward.
If you want to change it, open up MSBTMain.lua, in the version I'm using (Version: 5.5.106), it's a block of code on lines 438-455 in the local function GetInOutEventData(parserEvent).
The code checks to see if the recipientUnit is player first, and catagorizes as INCOMING, then checks to see if the sourceUnit is player, and catagorizes as OUTGOING.
All you have to to is change the order of the check, so it will do the OUTGOING check first.
Original code:

Seems to be working for me; I'm getting my self heals and Souldrinker procs in my notification window, and heals cast on me aren't showing up there.

That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a ton, I'm pretty new at trying to edit code for addons.
