New tires for my truck. I have needed them going on a year and was ready to bite the bullet and my parents came through. :)

And a remote start for my truck from my wife since her van gets the garage and, with 4 kids, it is not like any OTHER vehicle is going in there!

Other than that? Some clothes for work, a 10x10 easy up for going to watch kids outdoor events in the summer and a couple of board games (we do game night a lot in our house), and a couple of DVDs (The Blindside and Facing the Giants).

My wife and I were talking the other night and laughing that when we unpacked from our travels to family, we found a gift for me that I had not even opened. I was so busy helping my kids get THEIR toys out of the boxes that I did not have time to open my gifts. The old TV commercial is true, "Having a baby changes EVERYTHING!"

A Wii from my brothers.
Some post it notes from my brother's girlfriend.
A broken hot water heater.
And the news that my goddaughter has officially entered puberty.

You're not privileged enough to know more details than that.

(Though, it does lead me to ponder other things about differences between the genders...)

What is it with mothers' NEED to frigging tell everyone when their daughter gets their first period? I mean really.

Is that is what it is? Some shaming thing?..

Maybe they made Christmas cards out of the discharge and sent it out.

That'd be awesome.

and gross.
We live in a society where people born on third base constantly try to steal second, yet we expect people born with two strikes against them to hit a homerun on the first pitch.

I don't think it's that. More like they're proud their daughter has hit puberty. However, what they don't seem to acknowledge is just because THEY'VE had their period for 20 some odd years and are comfortable discussing it, doesn't mean their 11 or 12 year old daughter is happy about letting the whole world know. It's also super awkward because it's not like you go around discussing your mom's period, or your best friend's period with other people. It's just a really bizarre ritual that mothers seems to enjoy celebrating/inflicting on their daughters.
