The First trailer has been released.
Looks like they'll be trying to do a bit more tie-ins to LotR than was in the book. I'm not sure how much I like the appearance of the dwarves, but other than that, it seeems like it should be pretty good.
Thoughts?

Squeal like a schoolgirl. Seriously though, I'm really excited, and very happy to see consistency in actors like Gandalf and Galadriel. More than was originally written? Interesting idea, it will be interesting to see what exactly that entails. I'm a very big fan of the series, and in times past have read much of the extended works like Silmarillion and Lost Tales. But I really liked the movies, so I'm willing to see how it unfolds and what story ends up getting written.

I'm thinking that they might be putting in some stuff from the appendixes, perhaps more detail regarding Gandalf's fight with the necromnacer of mirkwood(sauron) or perhaps the beginning of gollum's journey from the goblin tunnels.

I'm okay with retelling the story, not just rehashing what we've read. I see no reason not to use more fleshed out histories to re-tell the story.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
I have followed the progress of these films through the production videos and blogs on the main website and they would appear to promise that two epic films will soon be upon us.
I wonder if the clips of Gandalf in the caverns were actually him exploring Dol Guldur or simply something from the adventures through Goblin Gate. It will be interesting to see.
Casting looks to be spot on again.

Seconded.
I was like, "Meh, the Hobbit. Whatever. I'm sure They'll do a good job." That has transitioned into full-blown squee-ing.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
As my favorite of the series of books, this movie has made me eager to get to the end of 2012. Was hoping they'd release in the Summer, but it'll do fine in December of next year.
