Hold that thought!

Postby Shyrtandros » Mon Dec 12, 2011 12:01 pm

We all know about the major statistics -- thousands of people die from things like cancer, accidents, or other illnesses every day. However theres 1 more statistic that is important.

Texting while driving kills 6,000 annually in the U.S. alone.

A study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) reports that a driver's risk of collision is 23 times greater when they are texting.

*Important Note* By all means I didn't post this to open a huge debate about distracted driving, texting, how good you are vs. the general populace or anything like that...

I found the results of the study shocking (albeit expected)and wanted to let all my friends & family know. Which over the past year I've grown to consider everyone here included. :) Please stay safe everyone.

Some states have made it illegal, some states have also made talking on the phone illegal while driving.

I have a friend who won't text while driving in cities where it is explicitly illegal, but will in cities where it is not. She knows it is dangerous and stupid, but the only reason she changes her behaviour is based on the published laws.

She makes me want to scream.

My better half has a HUGE problem with this, and she thinks shes good at multi-tasking while driving. I prefer to not answer my phone or touch it period unless I am stopped at a red light or in a parking lot. Have been there when it was serious and know the ramifications.

Most states have a law against "Distracted Driving" but every city has it's own criteria of what's allowed and prohibited..

I think for fun i'm going to make a spoof picture of me on my motorcycle texting with both handles on one of the roads no one uses near the house, i'll be parked but i'm sure with the right camera angle no one will be able to truly tell. Throw some blurring on the background to make it look like I was moving. ;) Sounds fun.

No helmet allowed for that one, of course.

I text while driving but I use voice to text. Did the study have any stats on that? The last report I had read showed that hands free stuff wasn't any safer, because it's more about the shift in concentration from the road to the conversation.

Mythbusters did some testing with drunk driving & cell phone (talking while) driving, it was a great episode, they had a handful of the mythbuster staff do a driving course with actual driving instructors scoring them and had local police issue breathilizers and had them drink until they where over the legal limit to perform the drunk driving test...

I wasn't suprised that the Drunk Driving was significantly SAFER than Cell Phone driving albeit they still failed and it was unsafe.

It would be interesting to see a comparison test between talking on the phone, talking to a passenger, and drunk driving.

That was done, too (also by Mythbusters and a few other shows). Talking to a passenger isn't as bad as driving drunk, but talking on the phone (even with hands-free speech through bluetooth and speakerphone) was WAY worse than drinking and driving.

It's a law here, so is wearing a seat-belt. Neither are necessarily enforced (well) though.

Hmm, I wonder why talking on the phone is so much worse than talking to a passenger, one would think that they would be the same, if not the other way around.
