I (hate / love) my job - Thread

Postby Geaux » Mon Aug 15, 2011 2:31 pm

Post your absolute frustrations about your job....just get it out your system!

Post what you love about your job today....so everyone else who isnt so happy can wish their job was so cool.

I will go first....I hate my job because I am measured on my productivity and have to be acountable for every second of every day on a monitoring system, it measures accuracy which I have to maintain 98% accuracy while maintaining productivity requirements..If I don't make either I could get terminated. Got to love the corporate machine...

I love my job because I barely do anything. I hate my job because by not doing what I have to do, I leave myself bored. Also internet filters stop me from visiting any fun websites. It's basically wikipedia, this site, and news sites, plus a few other oddballs.

I work at a nursing home. The residents tend to stare at you without saying a word and it creeps me out. :(

I work on the network for the evil empire (we even have a death star as our corporate symbol!) and really hate what I do. It's not challenging, just a bunch of CYA crap for a company that could care less about its workers. I do my time each day and check out as quickly as I can come quitting time.

I don't really fall into either the love or hate camp. I work with people who respect and appreciate me, and I don't know if anyone can ask for more than that. It isn't my dream job, there are things I would rather be doing and issues that are closer to my heart. However, I get to work in a field where I feel like I am doing something positive most of the time.

Working in pediatrics has it's own pitfalls and "landmines" and I often have to steel myself to sit through the screams and pleading of children and young adults as they get their blood drawn. It is hard to explain how hard that can be. Thankfully my position has allowed me to pick and choose the studies I work on and this lets me stick with those I truly believe in.

This is what I call the medical records of dead children

What about I love my job but hate my boss? I love the job and couldn't imagine doing anything else while I'm at uni but oh lord if I don't want to stab my boss on a daily basis.

I love my job.
I work in IT, desktop support specifically.
Its good because:
A. I'm no longer doing phone support
B. I get to play with PC's day long
C. I'm paid well
D. I've got a great team, everyone gets along well and is supportive
E. The organization I work for is supportive and nice as well. (Catholic Institution).

[EDIT] P.S. If you ask me a tech support question I will ask back "Have you rebooted yet?" :P

Meh. Easy job, sometimes not enough to keep me busy, and nothing particularly interesting. I have no idea what I actually want to do, so for now it's as good as anything I guess.

Mine can be broken down into two parts (with love/hate in both)

I love being in the military because:
Steady paycheck
Not likely to be "downsized" (forceshaped) as long as I do my job and follow the rules
Decent benefits (tuition assistance, medical/dental, housing/food allowances, etc)
Chance to see the world (currently in Germany, after here I'm headed to Korea, then possibly Japan)
I don't have to figure out what I'm wearing for work each day (and I get a yearly allowance for new uniform items, whether I need new items or not... yey "free" money!)

I hate being in the military because:
It has a strict dress code (I can't grow out my hair or have a clean looking goatee, for example)
It (currently) doesn't accept openly gay people
I'm required to maintain a certain level of fitness (though admittedly, most people can be "prepared" by working out ~1 month prior to testing)
The beauracracy can be insane at times

I love my current job in the military (intel) because:
I have a lot of down time to spend on Maintankadin
It has some marketability whenever I do decide to leave the military

I hate my current job in the military (intel) because:
I don't regurgitate info very well (which is primarily what we do in intel)
Due to it being "critically manned" I have very few prospects for getting out of it, short of leaving the military

Honestly, I think I'd be happier in a more "technical" position (working on computers or in finance or something) rather than the "abstract" position intel presents.

I work at a bank in the communications department.

I love most of the people I work with and I have a lot of respect for my bosses - which is new to me - usually I find my bosses to be kinda stupid. I used to absolutely love my job, but after three years of the same thing it's gotten a bit dull. However, I do love the steady paycheque, the location (within 20 minutes walking distance from our apartment) which is in the core of downtown and the opportunity this job provides me with the chance of expansion.

Well if it makes you feel any better, being able to VPN into that network (wireless side) sure did make life a lot easier for me!

I've just finished a PhD (well, DPhil, because old institutions like to be confusing) in organic chemistry. Before "that's not a job" - it's at the very least 9-5 5 days a week and generally quite a bit more, and you get paid to do it via a stipend, so it's very close in some respects.

What I love(d) about it: science is mostly pretty fun. I had a huge amount of control over how I spent my time (within reason), and I got lots of opportunities which look great on my CV (as well as the qualification itself). Plus the next time someone patronises me, you better believe I'll be interrupting them with "...actually, it's Dr [name]." :D

What I hate(d) about it: my field is absolutely notorious for its terrible (i.e. non-existent) work/life balance. I've been extremely lucky in that my supervisor only cares that you get work done, not the hours you're in the lab, which is a rare blessing. The field as a whole has a tribal, macho attitude towards working hours and holiday time and a life outside your job and even if you don't actively suffer from such attitudes the pressures still exist, through peer pressure and outside influence.

Career progression is also pretty awful. At the moment (organic) chemistry in this country (Britain) is not a strong job sector by a long shot, and academia is incredibly off-putting due to the above attitude issues (plus the insane competitiveness). Even if you do get an industry job, you'll be paid less than a generic graduate scheme would despite your 6-9 years of training in the field and highly specialised skills and knowledge. Where's the incentive?

I've been fortunate enough to land a job in patents, but since I've not started yet I can't bitch and moan/sing its praises quite yet.

-no career growth
-stifling environment; policy overrides results
-lack of drive in other colleagues
-zero intellectual stimulation/challenge
-not using my skills/competencies at all

-decent work life balance
-I'm employed
-decent human beings to be around

I'm employed and I have a place to hunker down in while we wait for this down cycle to pass.
