<insert witty comment about how California is a separate country>
A relative of mine posted on facebook that we're celebrating, "the day we stole our counrty from the indians."
I was bothered.

Its true when you think about it. All boils down on how one defines 'ownership'/'custodianship' of land.
Same deal over here in Australia. The original Australians consider Australia day (26th Jan) to be invasion day.

Admittedly, I'm not too familiar with Australian history, but there were people colonizing what would become America since the late 1500's/early 1600's, Independence day (July 4th 1776) was us declaring independence from the UK

Most Native Americans I've known during my life consider Columbus Day to be the travesty of a holiday.

Facepalm Day.
Running Beaver: Hmm...look at these poor pale skins. They will surely die in the coming winter.
Chief Laughing Bear: Perhaps we should help them by providing them with food and shelter?
Running Beaver: That sounds like a rational and well thought out plan with absolutely no negative repercussions!
