All I can do is sigh. Mind you I'm an ex-smoker. But this still irritates me. Discuss.

In Canada they post disgusting pictures on the packaging.

I was shocked when i saw my friends smokes. Good thing I don't smoke XD

The government is going so hardcore on trying to stop people from smoking through PR but it's all bull because they love the tax revenue they get from cig sells or why not just outlaw it? After all they did outlaw alcohol for a while. Not saying I'm for them outlawing smokes or alcohol, but they are playing both sides of the fence.

I don't smoke often, but I think I'd invest in a cigarette case.

When alcohol was abolished people started making moonshine and smuggling alcohol from states without abolition, I'm not sure how successful banning tobacco would be.

I fucking hate all the misinformation. "Cigarettes cause cancer" my ass! They contribute to a higher risk factor for getting cancer, but that doesn't have quite the same ring to it I guess.

How is "causes" and "contributes to a higher risk factor" actually different?

Being shot doesn't always cause death, it just contributes to a higher risk factor of dying of internal haemorrhaging, right?

Causing = If you smoke you'll die. Which isn't the case.
Contributes = If you smoke, you'll have a much higher risk of dying.

Causing = any gunshot wound is fatal. Isn't the case.
Contributes = If you get shot, there's a high risk you'll die.

If cigarettes caused cancer, they'd have a 100% mortality rate, which isn't the case. They are packed with carcinogens, which contributes to the chance you'll get cancer.

They aren't even the #2 contributing factor to cancer risk - the number one risk factor for cancer is genetics. The number two risk factor for cancers are oncoviruses. Carcinogens and other environmental factors are a distant third.

And technically Aubade, if you smoke, you will, eventually, die. But then again, so does everybody else.

This is true, and until I decide to quit for good, I'm going to happily puff away on my delicious cigs. =3

I tried to take up smoking once. After going through a couple of packs and still feeling no enjoyment (or addiction) from the process, I decided to stop wasting money, and never bought another one.

You can't control your genetics, unless people want to start anti-cancer eugenics which I don't think would go down well with the population.

We are vaccinating against HPV now, to lower cancer rates. Although they should really be vaccinating boys as well as girls (throat cancer is pretty grim).

Makes sense to educate people about the risks of smoking, in a similar way to educating people about the risks of alcohol, driving, skydiving etc. The pendulum may have swung too far over to the excessive warning side from the no warning at all side.

I just hate the smell of smoke on my clothes, so I'm glad people don't smoke in pubs now.

Don't bitch, you'll learn to ignore it. They all did here in this country. Just be glad you aren't completely forbidden of smoking in public areas and thus restricted to small cabins sparsely distributed. Which is what I would force smokers to. Then I'd crush the cabins.

Hell if its anything like the massive warnings on the packets in the UK - you'll find someone creates a bunch of stickers to put over the top with better images and humorous slogans anyway.
