Re: Questions for those that play Rift
i played rift in the beta and got my warrior tank upto i think 22 before i got burned out
tanking is pretty fun, but alot of the abilities and spells are copycats just replacing holy damage with fire damage, or just straight copies between trees...er souls
one thing i did enjoy though was my cleric
i went shaman druid justicar....omg
you whack things with a big mace and you can heal through doing damage...AND YOU CAN OT!
much fun..but i was getting burned out on rifts by that point so i quit the beta.
i have been told that they were stress testing us..i mean the servers, but i didnt like the idea when a zone invasion occurs it basically shuts down all questing in the zone.
oh and it seemed that when a new rift would pop up, it would be 3-5 lvls above me (high enough to punt me across the zone) and would spawn right where i had to kill sh...tuff for the quest i was on

Flex:I don't make mistakes. I execute carefully planned strategic group wipes.

Can you explain what you mean by "imbalanced"? Is it as in, flavor of the month/patch specs rule the field, or things like class X has trouble with everything, or healers can't effectively contribute, etc? I know several wow PvP-ers have gone to Rift and seem satisfied with it.
How is it different from what? What is it that you like most about it, and what is it you dislike most about it?
How customizable is the UI?

Stop trying to define and understand the problem!

Imbalanced means anything from "Fuck you playing the class that can kill everyone" to "Fuck you playing that class that goes well with this other class to kill everyone but isn't that strong on its own."
Balanced means anything from "No class has a real advantage over any other class" to "If melee reach a caster the caster is dead" to "My Necromancer Champion Berserker is unkillable in PvP."

We live in a society where people born on third base constantly try to steal second, yet we expect people born with two strikes against them to hit a homerun on the first pitch.

So I'm giving the 7-day thing a whirl, and might do a paid subscription for awhile just to see some of the later content.
Currently I'm playing a Paladin/Void Knight/Warlord. Anyone with experience have any thoughts on this set up? It seems pretty sturdy, and able to generate decent threat, but I'm wondering how it would play out past 15.

LOL
That's basically exactly what I was asking. I have no idea how to guage pvp balance, since I invariably end up experiencing gankage (in wow, in Aion) that is of the "level 50 vs level 25" variety, and nearly never in the "Yeah I have no hope of killing a shadow priest" variety. (Though, prot paladin vs spriest was an "entertaining" duel (air quotes).)

Right now casters are unbeleivable. Mages are FOTM and hit rediculously hard. Clerics when played correctly are GOD mode.
Edit:
Oh, and there is no rank differential when you que for the Warfronts (Battlgrounds). You can be facing a full team of LVL 6 geared opponents, and you just dinged 50, but I think that's standard. They're done in Battlegroups as well, but only between 2 or 3 shards so you get to know your opponents.
I think you can only get to lvl 15 on the trial if i remember correctly. I'm running a decent Paly\Warlord\Reaver spec for my PVE tank spec. It has good threat single target and AOE. Only one taunt (think deathgrip) but for the most part I hold my own threat wise. If you want, let me know and I can post my build when I get home.
Edit2:
Oh yeah, if you lvl on a PVP server, definately prepare to be griefed, especially if like me, I leveled while in a PVP guild that most of the opposite faction have a kill on sight order on. It makes for good times.

On that note, if you really like PvP I would recommend rolling Guardian on Deepstrike over any other choice, from everything i've seen they totally dominate in both the xrealm battlefronts and on their own server in world pvp.

LOL, yeah we have a good time, and there are more Defiant than Guardians on our server. We have a good battlegroup. The Defiant finally got smart and they will roll up in "premades" against us.

Re: Questions for those that play Rift
I signed up for the trial, which took me a few days to peak at lvl 15 on my warrior. Game was interesting enough to buy, so i bought the CE. The extra $10 was totally worth it for the free 60% mount on every new character at least starting the game fresh. The starter zones were packed with people, I am assuming from many free trials. Now that I have moved into the 20+ zones there are far fewer people and I am on a higher pop server. The entire zone invasions are fun, but also a pain when all the quest givers are dead. Very easy to pick up and play for a WoWer. Great graphics and jsut a nice change of pace.

That's a pretty standard tank build. It's plenty sturdy, but would level really slow. Remember at 13 you can quest all the other souls and get your dual spec (up to 5 specs with enough money).
Beastmaster / Reaver / Champion is a pretty good leveling build. Lots of reactives, good cooldowns, enough survivability to quest efficiently.
Currently I'm having a blast with my Cleric running Inquisitor / Justicar. Self healing (% of dmg dealt) offensive Aoe specialist. Farming machine with zero downtime.

Re: Questions for those that play Rift
I've hit 18 now & gone with the stickied Tank mitigation build ( I know sucker 4 punishement Void Knight/Reaver/Paladin.
It's fairly slow going but pretty enjoyable.
My two main current gripes are lack of nameplates (as Psi Mentioned... have I got aggro or not ???)
& being dismounted by every mob that hits me, even if they are many levels below me.
Quests are the same grind as WOW the economy is the same but different.
There are a lot of abilities to pick up, but as mentioned many are similar but just in different souls.
I think i'll stick with it for a while, the number of bugs seems fairly low & connection stability for me at least is pretty good.
Graphics whilst good are pretty resource hungry, at least it supports SLI as well.

I'll also be leveling with my wife, who tends to play DPS types, so hopefully it won't be too slow. I'm curious though to see how my AoE threat generation becomes later on. Currently I'm relying on the VK's aoe, and that builds up slowly through Pacts.
planning on going deep into Paladin, fairly deep into Void Knight and picking up the first bit of Warlord.
Also rolled a Cleric. Justicar/Shaman/Warden. Wanted to go deep Justicar, but Shaman is a crazy good tree too.

Re: Questions for those that play Rift
So, higher level mounts have higher resistance to having the rider being knocked off.
One thing I've realized about the abilities. You're not meant to use all the low level abilities from all 3 souls. Each soul has a base set of abilities, and basically you use your primary soul's abilities that get buffed, and a select few from your other souls. But each souls is sort of self sufficient, having a basic set of abilities.
And on Warden, it's a healing build, some caster talents. Druid is a better offspec to pair with shaman/justicar, more melee talents.
