When I saw it I thought "this sounds too much like a Blizzard fanboy's dream to be true".

This is the smartest decision Blizzard ever made.
It only took 4 years or so of it getting suggested.

From my understanding this has existed in more unofficial manners in the past.
We live in a society where people born on third base constantly try to steal second, yet we expect people born with two strikes against them to hit a homerun on the first pitch.

tbh the quest designer position looks more interesting to me, if only I was already done with my degree :/

I live near not too far from Blizzards Austin, Texas location and I declined an offer from a Blizzard recruiter to go interview for a support job there. (Their pay scale was a little wimpy..)

Can't us Europeans get a work+residence permit or something?

This would probably be a great way for someone to get their foot in the door, which is always the hardest part. Expect REALLY hard work, long hours, and crappy pay. Don't expect a dream job at all! This is a huge opportunity for someone to get into the field. If you don't have any strong financial or family commitments to worry about (you're young!), and want to get into the software testing field, you should go for this!

They could, but they'd have to prove that they couldn't find someone equally suitable to do the job in their own country.

It's certainly possible to get sponsored. And if they really like the candidate, I'm sure they can work out things. Depends on the country you are coming from as well.
If you are really interested, give it a shot, it's just the time for the application.

Re: Blizz has a job for you...
For this position you have to live locally (or ninja relocate) and be eligible to work in the US.
While Blizzard do do US work visas this isn't at a level which has that as an option. It's temporary which is a major reason for this - the paperwork is hellish and in general you have to prove that it's a position which can't be properly filled by a US national.
Sorry to be such a voice of gloom - I'm a European games designer and so have the daily experience of seeing jobs I love the sound of and am easily qualified for but are US based so I reject them out of hand. (admittedly more because European health insurance is the only sort that can offer my accident mangled body care and attention without me paying through the nose.)
