Alison Krauss - US Female
Pure A capella (and not great sound quality)
She'd be the one to sing me to sleep at night if I could afford it. She has the most "pure" voice of any vocalist I can think of.
From Wikipedia: "Alison Krauss has won a record twenty-six Grammy Awards over the course of her career as a solo artist, as a group with Union Station, as a duet with Robert Plant, and as a record producer. This is more than any other female artist and is the third most won by any artist overall." I had no idea she had won THAT many.
Also, Amy Lee is a bitch. I do concert security as a sideline gig and had the misfortune of meeting her. That woman can take a flying leap off of a cliff and die in a massive fire. The lead singer from Flyleaf, however, is a sweetheart.

But she's still absolutely gorgeous.

My notion of beauty is perhaps a bit different. In makeup she's still only about a 6/10 to me. Without her makeup it's more like, "OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!"

Idk if I've ever seen a picture of her without makeup. I mean, there are hotter women out there, but she's definitely attractive.

Yeah, I forgot about Alison Krauss. I only ever heard one of her songs though, not being interested in country/western music. It was a duet with someone else, and I think I got it on a soundtrack somewhere. Either that, or it was a request while I was still DJing.
Amy Lee is not hot. If you want someone that's hot in the same sort of visual style as Amy Lee (goth/industrial), try Brittany Bindrim (lead singer of I:Scintilla):

If you want to get into appearances, none can beat Simone Simons, imo. I'd post links or pics, but I'm on my phone.
My gf and I have our "laminated list". You know, top ten celebrities you could cheat with and its not cheating. Simone is my #1. Go on youtube and watch Epica - This is the time.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sarah McLachlan. We saw her live last week and it's frightening how much she sounds exactly like her record (unlike practically everyone else out there that puts out records.) Almost every single artist I've seen live can't actually hit the notes that they do on their records. Amy Lee was one in particular that stood out to me, her voice wavers when she tries the higher/louder notes.

Allison Krauss, Sarah Mac are amazing singers. Also, based purely on singing talent and ability:
Mary J Blige
Jennifer Hudson
Chris Cornell
Mike Patton
I think you'd have to handicap the USA pretty hard to make this an even competition.

No you wouldn't. Just because you yanks haven't heard of other countries amazing vocalists doesn't mean they aren't out there and better than yours. Unless it's a "Who's more widely known" competition instead of a "who can actually sing the bestest", I'd say the Americans would be hard pressed to win.

That was one of the things I was talking about with my gf. In a world competetion, Christina Aguilera is one of the only popular american singers we could think of we'd pit against singers from around the world. Its hard to judge popularity in the world stage. I'm sure India and China etc have some absolutely insanely great singers that we'll never hear of, but are very popular in their country.

I'd have to suggest Brian Molko from the UK, whilst hardly what you might call 'upbeat' his band Placebo have done some great tunes and his voice is absolutely beautiful imo.

I think that the new age of music will reveal the truths that Lev has prophesied. I have thought that this contest was a steel-cage match of vocal ability and pop appeal, so I stand by my champions. I will also add Raphael Saadiq and D'Angelo after watching this and this.
