Router packet priority control.

Postby gibborim » Wed Mar 16, 2011 1:29 pm

Anyone know of some good software for prioritizing traffic over a router? For example, I would rather WoW traffic get attention first from my router rather than one of my roommates running bittorrent kicking me down to 500ms+ latency.

What kind of router do you have? It's usually an setting in the firmware, but some routers have more QoS options than others. There may be software solutions out there as well.

thats funny cause I was looking at that the other night on my router, you can set it per port and per program... if you have admin access to the router setting you might be able to do it there

Like Cerwillis said, what type of router? Some routers you can flash with a freeware version of their IOS that may allow this functionality. I have a DLINK with a built in program called Gamingfuel that will prioritize packets for me.
Thinking of starting WOW again....

For lots of router control, http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index is a good option.

An easier solution would be to ask your roommate to throttle the upload/download speeds, many clients have that ability. Heck there is probably a client that can modify the speeds based on time of day so it won't impact raid times or peak gaming times.

The other option is MAD (Mutually Assured Downloading) get your own bittorrent client and crank that sucker up when he tries to get online.

1) go to hardware store, buy hammer
2) go to housewares store, buy icepick
3) take cover off room-mate's PC
4) ...
5) WoW latency improves, profit

Sounds like a plan to me, nothing can go wrong with a mallet and a pick-axe.

I have sabotaged their μTorrent settings repeatedly.
