If I was to get into Pokemon with this iteration of the game, is there any difference for a first time player between picking up black or white?

Realistically, all you're choosing between each color are the final legendary pokemon and a few minor differences in the other pokemon. White/Black apparently have the "White Forest" and "Black City" but both will likely end with similar results (the "rare" pokemon likely being a little different.) Neither color should be easier/more difficult than the other, so pick the one that has the cooler looking (to you) Legendary pokemon (or if you like the color black better than white (vice versa) then you can pick that way.)

My pokemon exploits:

Owned:
Red
Silver
Sapphire
Leaf Green
TCG (actual cards)

Played but didn't own:
Yellow
Snap
Stadium
Stadium 2
TCG (GB version)

Don't know that I'll pick up Black/White, since I didn't play Leaf Green for long... it was a remake of Red/Blue so lost a lot of it's appeal.

I'm waiting until Pokemon puce to pick up the series. Eventually they'll run out of "real" colors and have to start using the designer shades.

Nothing at all really, it doesn't matter much.
Most people pick based on which game-exclusive legendary they like better, but you don't get those until the end.

So... when they continue the trend... the next one (that's the exact same as the Black/White except like... 2 pokemon) should be Gray?

That's my guess.
I'm kind of hoping it will be Pokemon Brown to continue the "Pokemon Race Wars" theme.

They could always re-release Yellow or Red :D.

Cool, thankee :)

Wasn't sure if this 'triple battle' and 'rotational battle' stuff meant one was more newbie friendly than the other. Given that it doesn't matter I think i'll plumb for the black one since the city looks cooler in that pic!

I have rejoined the legions of poketards with this release. It is pretty fun.

I have to ask though, did they make things do more damage? I feel like my guys have more of a propensity to just drop dead after getting hit once with even small level disparities than I remember from back in the old Red/Blue days.

I'm going to feel such a nerd like I never have before...

Overall, yeah things do more damage. You'll notice it early since they increased the power of Tackle from 35 to 50, but its more than just that. It's primarily the physical/special split that really got things rolling.
Used to be all Rock moves were physical, all Fire was special, etc. Then, every move was keyed to Physical or Special attack individually. Had a poke with high special attack but Normal typing? Well, now it can enjoy its STAB and primary stat through Tri Attack. Were you Kingler, with a monstrous attack stat but only learned the special based Water? No more, now you can Crabhammer the competition into oblivion. Not only that, but with a diverse range of attacks you can also target the weaker defense of your opponents fairly easily.

Also, a fair number of options you have for a good portion of the beginning have frail defenses and juiced attacks, and when facing off against pokes similarly built, things tend to get smashed.

I was wondering why my pokemon were getting their asses kicked by Tackle early on

I got a shock when I played D/P for the first time (which is the first series they did that I believe), I was all like, what the hell.
