Mark Hamill was better than both put together.
Not only was he able to keep the psychotic manic killer theme, but he was actually able to maintain a feel of "Oh, I really don't want this character to die, because he's such a badass."
Also, his laugh was the best.

Well, I love Jack, but the issue with his Joker was the part about him being the killer of Thomas and Martha Wayne. That is not a new thing - it was established in 1948 that Joe Chill was the killer.
And Mark Hammil was a great Joker it is true...

I prefer to think about it as DC Comics lampshading all the retconned Joker origin stories whenever he refers to a multiple choice past.

While that may very well be what's happening, it's their character, and they apparently feel that's how it should be. /shrug
It does add a somewhat interesting element to the character though.

I don't know that I agree. I like the Dark Knight Joker more; because he represented, as someone pointed out, the complete antithesis of Batman - a force of pure chaos/anarchy. He was something Batman couldn't really deal with, and he both won and lost.
They pulled it off well enough to do something that none of the other Batman movie villains/actors did - make me look forward to the next movie.

Re: The Dark Knight Joker vs 1989 Batman Joker
It is really hard for me to pick a joker as my favorite. I find that I have to separate the character from the actor, because including the actor really can bias the argument.
Without writing a giant wall of text, I feel like Trav hit the nail on the head. I feel pretty much the same way, and i really like the joker being the Antithesis to Batman. Chaos V Order, Good V Evil, and all that jazz. The joker in The Dark Knight is quite possibly one of the most disturbing villians in a comic book based movie, and it really felt more complete and a little less contrived at times. I think in 1989 they tried to hard to make it a
you made me, and I made you so now we must be enemies thing.
That said, I really do not care for any of the batman movies that aren't Nolan. I'm a huge fan of the batman comic books, and Nolan's movies are more Shadow of the Bat than campy 1980's stuff. I like that.

I think that's really interesting. He's more of an enigma, and harder to empathize with. Nicholson's joker was just a dick -- but you could empathize a little with it. But Ledger's joker just turned it up to 11, and seemed more consistent with the degree of insanity presented in the few comics I've read.

Re: The Dark Knight Joker vs 1989 Batman Joker
So it's clear we have some Batman fans here. With that being said I am curious what others' thoughts are on Nolan casting Gordon-Levitt to an unspecified role.
I personally think Nolan is a genius. I also happen to think that someone with his genius wouldn't cast an actor that is almost the spitting image of Ledger by mere accident.
Does he intend to recast the Joker?
Does he know that Batman fans and non-fans alike won't be able to resist the curiosity of this fact, thus creating more pub?
I am of the feeling that I don't see how they can recast Ledger's joker. However, I wouldn't be in shocked in any way if he did.

Plenty of other Batman villains to cast without choosing to redo the Joker. It is highly unlikely they could pull off something meaningful with a replacement Joker anyway.
Before anyone tries to guess who the next two (or three) villains will be, check this list out for reference.

Riddler is a good guess, as is Toyman (there have been a few Toyman - villains and heroes).

Of course! Why else would we choose to play Paladins?

Could have sworn Nolan has already confirmed Riddler as not being in it.
