New block meta

Postby Arjuna » Thu Jan 20, 2011 1:11 am

So now that the block meta is nerfed from 5% to 1%, this means that we will use the armor meta always, or is there some new values where the block meta is better?

Jewelcrafting

* Eternal Shadowspirit Diamond now increases Shield Block Value by 1%, down from 5%.

wasn't it always 1% and this was just a tooltip change?

It's just a tooltip update. The current value on live is 1%, so nothing changes.

The more block you have, the better the block meta will be. When you're at 85% Combat Table Coverage, generally it's better to use the block meta. :)

@Gaxby,

The Block Meta adds 1% Block Value (DMG Reduction), not chance to block.

So it is and only ever will be a flat 1% dmg reduction.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

That said and done, I'd like to add my 2 cents:

In my current gear set I gain no additional %dmg reduction by equiping the Stam/Armour Meta, much to my disapointment.

With Devotion Aura/Stone Totem, I'm at roughly 60.12% Dmg reduction and with the Stam/Armour Meta it is about 60.2?. I've tested both with/without Kings/Agility-Strength Buff, but as we know agility no longer affects armour.

So as a Prot Paladin that will always have access to Devo, I currently can't use this Meta as it does nothing.

My question is; there is a Stam/-2% Magic Dmg Meta, can anyone add logs over an entire raid, or give there opinion if it's time to get this meta now?

Fight I think -2% Magic is better than +1%Block Value:

1# Argaloth

2# Halfus (Depends on drakes, but usually alot of AoE Magic DMG)
3# Valiona (Meteor, Breath and other abilities?)

4# Magmaw (Due to armour debuff, +1%BV being as useless as -2%Magic while Mangled, also there is alot of AoE Fire DMG)
5# Omnitron (Isn't everything scary here Magic DMG?)

6# Maloriak (MT yes, OT NO)
7# Chommangus (Gas dude, Raid AoE)

8# Throne of 4 Winds

Fights I have no idea about: (Lucky me :|)

Lady Sinestra
Cho'gall
Elemental Council (I expect high raid Magic DMG?)

Nartharion
Atramedes

Al'kir

Note: I'm at work so I couldn't check the spelling on these boss names, appologies in advance.

@Gaxby,

The Block Meta adds 1% Block Value (DMG Reduction), not chance to block.

This is false. You have to consider relative damage reduction with and without the meta gem equipped. How effective that relative damage reduction will be depends on your current levels of avoidance and block. I believe the meta is additive, so it does change your block value from 40% to 41%. This is not the same as a 1% damage reduction.

Consider a tank with 0% block. The meta for that tank provides absolutely no damage reduction. Equipping it would do nothing. Now imagine a tank with no avoidance and 100% block. For that tank, the meta would be a 1.66% damage reduction, so the meta is obviously a much better choice for the second tank.

Let's imagine a more typical tank that might be equipping the meta. This tank has 25% avoidance (+5% miss) and 60% block for a 90% Combat Table Coverage. Imagine a sampling of 100 hits for 100 damage each. This tank would take:

60*(0.6)+10 = 46% so 4600 damage.

If that tank equips the meta, he would take

60*(0.59)+10 = 45.4% so 4540 damage.

This amounts to a relative damage reduction of 1.3%.

of course this 1.3% shift is from "nothing" to BV vs from another meta to it.

At 35k armor, you'd take 4553 damage in this example which is worse off than the BV meta, but at 40k armor, the its 4540dmg with the BV vs 4550dmg with armor meta. Still worse off, but I know I don't have anywhere near 90% Combat Table Coverage yet. At lower CTC, armor takes the lead (as shown other places here)

And even if this was 100 hits of 10000, the difference in damage taken would be a fraction of a single heal over 100 hits.

Very correct, nice maths, however you have to round down that 0.3%

So it is still only 1% for your model

Er... what? Why would he have to round that down? It's the ratio of damage taken with and without the meta, there's no rounding involved.
