Looking for an addon

I used to use Acheron to track what killed people but it doesn't work with Cata, anybody have a suggestion for a replacement?

I use Recount to check people's death logs.

not sure what your exact needs are, but I use an addon called fatality to announce raid deaths. It announces the death with relevant info like a spell link, damage, overkill, etc.

I'm not looking for something to necessarily announce deaths or cause of deaths. Acheron would take snapshots of the combat log for each individual party or raid member when hey died so you could look at the log whenever you wanted during a raid. I found it particularly useful to see the last seconds before death to see what caused the death, not just the specific killing blow.

You would see something like below with appropriate timestamps

Recount does that. It even makes a pretty graph of your health over time.

Fatality is one of the best addons there is.
Many addons you can manage without, but someone in the raid should really always have this.
Shows everyone in the raid what a person died from, and if its from avoidable damage, obviously that person will try not to make that mistake again since the whole raid WILL know about it, instead of dying in a corner without having a clue as to why.
Id also recomend Recount for deathlogs to bring up if you wanna have a closer look (Recount is known for slowing down your computer more than other dmgmeters, and on some fights it can completely wreck your computer, always a good reason to try to shut it off should you experience very low fps, chances are good it is)

Archavon just works fine for me...
I use it in conjunction with obituary which displays a chat line "xyz took 45000 damage from [cool ability] and died." on raid player death.
