You can get some specific devices for the task at a cheaper cost then that rental you mention.

For the different angles, couldn't you simply move the same camera every hour or so? You could have some of your friends dealing with this when required.

Set it up for Cataclysm launch night, if possible. Offer the photographers a flat rate, or get nannycams. Bonus: you'll be surrounded by teddy bears to watch your record grab!

(doubt there's any chance of failure, if all you have to do is go 24:00:01 to snatch the record. Anything past that is gravy.)

Have you tried contacting cable networks (the lesser known ones) to maybe film a documentary on your record grab? You're going to college, see if any film students are looking for a graduation project, or ask the instructor(s ) if they can point you in the right direction.

Yes, I've contacted my college. The "cheap" person was a film student. She wanted $10/hr for 72 hours to film my attempt.

Those portable DVRs are actually pretty nice. I might look into those. Thanks for the link!

If you plan on setting it up for Cata launch, you may want to contact Blizzard and their PR section.

If you start at Midnight on the 7th it's possible that they may invest cams that are needed to record the attempt.

If they don't want to help the cheapest way to do the recording would be to buy 3 small webcams, they all tend to come with software where you can change the recording settings and run this on a separate machine so that you're not causing your system to bog down, a 1TB HDD is only about $60 now so you've got plenty of storage space available.
Then get a friend (or a few friends) to sit at that machine to make sure that the recording is working properly.

all in all you could fund that section of it for less than $200 or so for the webcams and new HDD

Why would a film student doing their semester final project want you to pay THEM to do it?

That's what I was talking about - find someone that's looking for material for a project they have to do for class and collaborate with them. Not just find a film student willing to do it outside of class. Do it around, say, Thanksgiving weekend, so that the student has time to do the post-production work and turn it in as their final in their film class. Seeing if Blizzard would be on board with it as a Cataclysm release publicity stunt would probably also be a good idea...

Although, with the bad press they've gotten about people playing WoW until they die, or let their babies die, it might not fly as a publicity stunt. There's that to think about, too.

I've contacted Blizzard PR three times now and gotten no response. In addition to sponsorship, I was wondering if they could certify the character in question was active during the time period indicated.

As for release night, that's a no go. Union Station, apparently, has several events going on during December that I'm having to work around. As it looks right now, my most plausible dates will involve me sharing the floor space of the Great Hall with some kind of craft fair.

Sadly, not good ones. My locale at Union Station fell through and due to the immense hassle I went through to get that place I decided to just not pursue it anymore. I honestly feel like the only real way to get an accredited world record is to pay for the adjudicator and thats not something I really have the money for. Adjudicators in Chicago average about $8000 IIRC.
