Re: Race to 85...but wait..
I guess I'll miss the race, since the release happens to Tuesday and my vacation days are already planned out for another time.
That said, if I could participate, I probably would, but not for achievements. Instead, I'd try to level my herbalist/miner character as quickly as possible, in order to capitalize on the initial raw materials price boom.

simple solution would be for blizz to just have all servers down till a certain time the next morning, give everybody the entire night to install it etc....

A friend of mine is trying to talk his old employer to stock Cataclysm so he can try to buy a standard edition early so he can be online when the servers go live. I remember during WoTLKs release he was pissed off because he said while we were waiting in line to get our copies everyone else had access already.

It takes the hell of a lot to install this game... Installing WotLK took me hours. If I was to go to the opening and go back home to play, I could probably just go to bed to find the setup done in the morning, maybe.
Which in all honesty wont be to bad, I remember the first hours of WotLK were painful, server was laggy as everyone was downloading updates and you couldn't find a critter to kill.

Slanderous lies
Everyone knows that to have a server first in anything is to become an immortal, an avatar of all that is just and good, forever to be part of the lore of WoW and to have virtual children named after you, for people to turn, stare and whisper in awe at your character as you walk past them with your air of superiority and for all beings to embrace you as one of their betters.
NEWSFLASH
As mentioned before, achievements are optional.

Yet in the end, that's also the only person whose opinion truly matters.

Now that I think of it, I'll probably try for a compromise solution:
1. Pre-download the game in advance.
2. Get the activation key at midnight from some seedy goldselling e-store.
3. Race for Realm First Herbalism 525. Should take about 45 minutes.
4a. If I win: Bask in the glorious glory!
4b. If I fail: Sell the herbs on the AH for ridiculous prices.
5. Log off and level to 85 over the next few weeks at a leisurely pace.

BAM.
Blizzard has officially announced at BlizzCon that:
- You will be able to pre-load Cataclysm, buy it entirely online through their upgrade site and play it the second it goes live
- They will be switching on Cataclysm at Midnight PST (presumably globally)
Gamestop can't be happy about this, but just about everyone else will be.

Excellent. I was kinda counting on this.
Midnight PDT is 6pm here. I'll just need to leave work a touch early and I can be home right in time for the insane lagfest.

This is great.
Even though I think I will still be out at midnight to be present at the London Launch Event.
