These people right here are the type of people that I think all of us on both sides of the issue can agree, are WRONG. Look at what international day they are supporting. It makes me want to vomit.

9/11/10 - national burn a Korean day?
- I'm not Jesus, but I can turn water into Kool-Aid.

I wonder if the same people that come out and fight that they have the right to build this mosque here will also come out and fight that this pastor has the right to burn the Koran. (damn, that was a looong sentence)

My guess is no. The same arguement can be applied but folks choose to apply it only where it fits their needs/beliefs.

If this were the Bible instead, it would be drastically different imo.

hm... are they rebuilding the 1 and ACE stations at the WTC? if so that could be cool. At the very least I can say because this is all new construction it will look so clean for a while.

While they have a right to burn the Koran, there's a huge difference in intent between the two. Burning a Koran or Bible is just flat-out disrespect. It's a clear statement of intolerance of another persons religious beliefs.

Building a mosque is not the same statement at all, nor is building a church. Ground Zero is not a holy site of any religion, nor should it be. Again, Islam did not declare war on the US. It's no different than wanting to build a church near the site of the Waco compound, where a Christian sect managed to kill a lot of people, or a church in Jerusalem.

Unless we as a society can shake off this natural tendency to "pick teams" and unreasonably vilify other religions, we're never going to see a better age where religious tolerance is the norm.

I don't think anyone is arguing that this guy doesn't have the right to burn the Koran. I'm aware that local government is pressuring him financially, but as for the president, generals, other religious groups, they are asking him not to do this as it will fan the flames of international conflict. His "demonstration" would set back our progress in Afghanistan significantly, with very little positive impact. Petreus is trying to win the war with ass-kissing and payoffs, and this isn't part of his plan.

Personally, I think this guy just wants to say, "Hey look! We can be assholes and burn shit too!". I wouldn't say that it is illegal for him to do that, just monumentally stupid. Hopefully, this yokel will learn something this weekend.

And I don't think, outside of his inability to get a fire permit, there was any legal recourse that was going to be taken to stop or punish him.

It's a bit embarrassing that this got so much attention, our media should do better.

Yeah, this is completely and utterly idiotic, but also protected speech. I also think it's idiotic the a pastor of a church of 50 people holding a book burning is international news.

It's hard to find anyone to cheer for in the whole Koran burning situation. I mean, a major reason this burning is a problem in the first place is that there is bound to be some rioting and killing if it happens. The burning is obviously deeply offensive and I can't see any lens through which it would be a good idea, but that certainly isn't a reasonable response.

Well NPR was reporting that some German soldiers had to open fire at some protesters that were getting out of hand in Afghanistan over this issue. It didn't sound like anyone was seriously hurt, so I hope that holds true. There were some other larger and peaceful protests, but the sentiment seemed to be that the US government should stop him, which exasperates me somewhat. Of course we have people here that believe that too...

I thought the guy said that he wasn't going to do it though?

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I am totally against him burning the Koran because it is very disrespectful. I feel the same way as someone burning the Bible. This crack is obviously doing it for attention.

I just have seen folks argue that it is their right to build there even though it causes some hurt feelings. I have also seen Muslims that believe they shouldn't build there also because of hurtful relations it could cause...and possible violence. It just bothers me that some of those people won't use that arguement for pastor. If it applies to one group then it obviously applies to both.

To a degree that is true, though I think Bloomberg did say the guy had a right to do it. However, I think a lot of people weighing both of these situations to their own sensibilities reach two different conclusions. The mosque, while controversial isn't "wrong", but this jack-ass while controversial is "wrong".
