Critcisms of this spec

Postby Zoltar » Mon Mar 15, 2010 2:15 pm

One of our rets was asked to tank in ICC 25 last night alongside myself and a warrior. After the raid he whispered me suggesting I should tweak my spec for threat. I disagree. I am a little low on hit atm (which I sacrificed for armor) which affects threat a little, but not massively. I think the some of the choices he has made in his spec are poor ones for a raid tank. He is a good player and is regularly in the top 3 DPS as ret but I think there is lots of e-peen in his tank spec.

I find some of his choices in talents and glyphs strange but I'd like some confirmation of my spec if at all possible or suggestions about how to put a little more threat in it without losing good talents.

I'm pretty sure that that consecration glyph is going to mess up his rotation and cause him to do less TPS, and there's no reason not to have the Divine Plea glyph. Beyond that, there's really not much of a difference in your specs. You went with utility, DS/DG and POJ and he went with a little more threat. Neither seems particularly better than the other, just a little bit different.

his spec doesn't have vindication, pursuit of justice, or ds/dg. all fantastic utility talents. he has 2/2 sa when 1/2 is proven to be the best way to go. he has a point missing from crusade which is one of the best threat talents point for point we have. And the glyph of consecration throws a loop into the rotation. his spec has reckoning and conviction which barring the erronious glyphing and misallocation of points would net him more threat in the same gear. you're speccing for utility. he's speccing for threat(or at least trying to). neither is better or worse overall.

Me is right, him is a bad spec.

Cheers for the responses.

Any idea how I could get a little more threat without sacrificing too much?

This.

You don't need that extra threat all the time, so finding a non-spec solution is a beautiful thing. You can even start the fight with the slow weapon and swap to the more defensive one for the bits that need you to be more defensive.

The threat boost of slow vs. fast is very noticeable.

As tanking weapons, they are not even all that bad. They have lots of agility, which can make up for some of the lost avoidance, and the agility gives a little bit of armour as well. With luck you can find one with a socket so the HP difference is not as drastic.

Agree with the comments thus far, your spec is fine and a slow one hander or using the 200 str libram instead of 200 avoidance is probably more sensible threat choice than speccing heavier for threat.

I'd generally suggest you take 2/2 Imp Judge over 1/2 Imp BoM, I have not found 1/2 Imp BoM to be of any practicality. If you regularly need to buff BoM in your raids, you should consider going 2/2 Imp BoM and dropping the points in Heart of the Crusader (rogues, elemental shamans and maybe more also provide it). But this is not a threat choice anyway.

If you do want to spec more threat than dropping points drom DG/DS into Reckoning and Vindication/PoJ into Conviction is a viable threat option, but slow weapon/libram will provide more for less cost in survivability so you should explore that option first. Also if you're not using 2P T10, it's a nice threat boost and opportunity cost will be lower than speccing for more threat.

Your ret friends spec is bad for several reasons (Conviction is worse than crusade, 2/2 SA is useless, these are not options but just bad choices on his part).

^this

minus "If you do want to spec more threat than dropping points...Vindication"; there is no good justification not to have vindication
